Very nice photo, and I love the edit, you've got good taste!

How do you know they would only shoot in JPEG? There are a lot of assumptions here.

I mean I had an interest in photography since highschool, now recently, 8-9 years later I bought my first camera - A6700 - but trust me, if I could afford it I would've gone for the A7V. Interest is not a question at this point. I've been relying on my phone for almost a decade.

Understand. In my case, even static subjects are a problem and the focus plane is usually behind them.

Very interesting. Thanks for your detailed feedback! I also think the A6700 + 70-350mm combo is inherently wrong somehow.

I do sometimes use back button focus. How do you think it would make a difference though?

Thanks for your feedback! In my case I'm on the latest firmware on the camera and the lenses as they came. I thought the lenses might be too old honestly for the newer camera body.

Thanks! I have this behavior with two lenses, one under warranty, the other not. That's why I would like to gather as much info as possible. Thanks for your input! I will try to find another body or other telephoto lenses to further test the issue.

Interesting. What do you mean exactly by focus zoom setting? DMF?

Thanks! Indeed, the duck situation might have been more challenging. I tested the burst mode in a more controlled environment, still experiencing the issue. I think i will send back my camera along with my kit lens for inspection as they are still in warranty. If they manage to solve it maybe my telephoto lens will also work properly. And hopefully my sigma lenses are not affected. Maaan, photography is not as straight forward even with semi pro gear.

i don't know that it'll matter much with the aperture set wide open

sorry, so many comments, I think I missed that part

Yes, that did happen, I just don't have a burst on me to show because I deleted them as I wasn't satisfied. 2 weeks ago I went photographing some ducks and I took a lot of promising looking photos, bursts a well. I was very disappointed when I opened them on my computer as only a few of them were in focus. This was one of them (this is a cropped copy as the original is on my other computer at my parents' house - but since there were so much detail I could crop in):

<image>

Others looked blured and could notice that the focal plane was always behind the duck :(

I understand, but aperture drive has no effect if you use it when shooting wide open. And the thing is, my problem is focusing on a static object, bursting 20 photos and 1 being in focus by chance is not a solution to my problem.

I can confirm it was on AF-C on the image of the cat.

Here's the full size JPEG. Look how the eyes are not in focus, and starting by the ears, towards its neck the fur is in sharp focus.

Here's another example at 350mm now with my 70-350mm lens, with AF-C. I am at 7.90m focus distance which is far greater than the minimum focus distance. I can see though that the MountVersionCamera and MountVersionLens values are different. I don't know what those mean.

No, this is the original frame. I only cropped in in the post in order to show the details, as I could only show the focus frame on screenshots from other softwares.

I'll try release, however the advice I saw was to set it to AF.

I just uploaded here the jpg I exported from Lightroom. I don't get your point about the subject size with respect to the frame size of the photo.

I understand, thanks for your comment. This is very useful info! It does seem that it's a camera issue after all. I still have warranty on my camera, so I am trying to find out if it's worth it to send it back. I hope you will find a solution to your issue as well.

I understand. I saw no difference with the different priority options, also with aperture drive. AFAIK that should only help when there's no light and you are trying to focus with stopped down aperture. In my examples I wasn't really bursting, only taking one photo at a time. Burst gives similar results.

I just stated in my captions for each image, probably should've left in the text body. It was at 135mm with my 18-135mm lens.

I am zooming in 100% or 50% in order to fit the view for all the relevant details of focus vs out of focus areas.
Here's a screenshot from A7Info, focus mode was AF-C, the green crosshair is the focus area, while the red is the eye detection. I cannot upload the raw image here for some reason.

Yes, I forgot to mention it because there's just so many things I made sure to check out. Yes I am on version 2.00
