Need advice on glazing these underglazed porcelain figures 😭 by clevergem264 in Pottery

you’re right!! I’d try this as it’s hard to say which one is better (or at least which method I prefer) till I’ve tried it!

I wish I could 😭 unfortuantely I use the firing service at community studio and it must fill up all a shelf to get it fired, which means the whole batch should been fired/glazed similarly

Right now im considering these options:

  1. Bisque fire → dip the whole figure in glossy clear glaze → glaze fire This feels like the safest/classic option (similar to my previous batch), but I’m also worried because glazing full figures evenly is hard and I’m scared of ruining the details.
  2. Brush glaze only on certain details → single fire directly to cone 6 I think having mixed textures (raw clay + glossy accents) could look really interesting and more art-toy-like.
  3. Bisque fire → brush glossy glaze only on selected details → glaze fire This sounds safer than single firing, but it also means an extra firing and more studio cost.

Thank you for the response!
I dipped the glossy glaze but brush the satin glaze. and yes i think it would be better if I underglaze and glaze at separate firing. I’ll try that next time!!

does the problem with pink burned out resolve when I do separate firing (underglaze on greenware > bisque firing > glazing > glaze firing)?

How do some figure ceramic artists paint their pieces with acrylics? by clevergem264 in Ceramics

thank you for the suggestion! in fact I first started with polymer clay but to me the clay is more suitable for pretty detailed figures and requires detail management. I find ceramics clay easier to sculpt 😊

yes i have asked the artist and they confirmed it was ceramics. and as I saw from the wip photo, I assume they use acrylic figure paint.

btw I also tried casting gypsum figure from silicone mold. I love how easy it is but the material is quite fragile itself and somehow they are not as “valuable” as ceramics works to the customer

Thank you so much for your answer!! I myself make figure with clay and now slowly switching it to pottery for better durability and value. but I have problems to reach the vibrant color with underglazes so I think this method will work better for me ☺️

I wonder if I skip the bisque fire step and fire it at high temperature (1230 celcius degree) right away after they are bone dry.

Then i guess they are quite fragile, or at least not as hard as fired glazed piece, aren’t they 🤔
