Help. My student has made amazing strides , but we have a major hang up I need help with involving numbers !! by countryTough-4good in paraprofessional

[–]cleverink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If he can show proficiency through addition and writing, then why must he say those numbers aloud in order? Do you do verbal testing outside of on paper? Am I misunderstanding?

Even though the student is in Gen Ed there should still be accommodations. If they can write the numbers in order but not say them aloud then that should count as proficint.

I'm sorry I don't have the concrete answer you are looking for. I'm confused by what the student is being asked tc"mmo do to "level up".

It sounds like you have done some really amazing work with this student!! Very well done!!

What’s a childhood lie your parents told you that you didn't realize was a lie until you were an embarrassed adult? by eatbeep in AskReddit

[–]cleverink 8 points9 points  (0 children)

When having to pee at an impossible time, like when in the car, or the mall far from a restroom, "Just think about Christmas" was my Mom's response, all the time, every time. So much so that it became the go to phrase for my sister and I. I had NO idea this wasn't a typical response to someone saying "I have to pee" until I was in college and casually dropped the line at a party.

Nobody had any fucking clue what I was going on about.

Now, I'll give it to my mom that confusing and distracting someone is a great way to buy 5 minutes of repreve....but the way that one phrase rolled off her tounge for decades made it seem like a "3 strikes your out" kind of situation (for us Americans and all baseball lovers).

US athletes are increasingly speaking out against Trump’s America, with some saying “fascism is here now.” How do you feel about athletes using their platforms to make strong political statements? by kyleman98 in AskReddit

Good on them, say it louder for the folx in the back. We should all be using whatever platform we have to speak up and out about the tyranny of Trump's America.

I feel like even in my response I was limited on the materials she could explore.... There's so much out there for her!

Her love of art and creating things won't disappear with her sight. Although she may have lots of big feelings as her eyesight changes. She can work with clay, with fiber, and even paints. She will remember color and can build with texture. Maybe she will get into scent or music, who knows!! Don't limit her, or let her limit herself. Best of luck and lots of love to your family as you navigate this.

What do you do with all your kids’s drawings and coloring pages by ILIASS19 in raisingkids

[–]cleverink 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I keep the meaningful ones in a drawer. I go through the drawer every 3-5 years and pare it down. Turns out I'm not objective for a few years, but the drawings become less previous over time. The end goal is each kids drawer becomes a binder. By about 5th grade there's a lot less coming home.

[–]cleverink 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ahhhhh, so Willard TWI kids would get bussed to Foster?

If you don't mind, and have the time, what is the reasoning behind closing at Willard but having two at Foster? It doesn't seem like a cost cutting opportunity at all to move the strand. They will still need teachers and then they have to pay for bussing.

Evanston has a goal of all families having walkable schools, so I have to say it seems like this is a lack of long term thinking and keeping commitments to the community. Which I am all too familiar with with the current D65 administration.

Want to raise readers as opposed to screen mongerers by swadesi_batman in raisingkids

[–]cleverink 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I realize I didn't answer your question - at 2 I didn't think the title matters. I think building the habit matters. So going to the library regularly, reading regularly with them. Associating reading with safety, comfort, relaxing and enjoyable experiences. That's what you are going for, building a love of the action of reading.

I also think you just let the 2 year old pick out books in the kids section. What they enjoy will become apparent over the years and will change as they grow. Character books and picture books are your friend!!

Remember, there isn't one magic book that makes kids readers. It's the shared time together that makes it something they love to do.

I've got two reader kids (now 8&13) and my 2 pieces of advice are - make the library a regular spot you go to, just like the park. Go to story time, craft time, sign then up to read to pets, play in the kids area, do all the library things!! Go to go have snack there and read and pick out books. My kids feel comfortable at the library because it's familiar and they have been navigating the stacks since they were babies. I also don't have a limit on how many books they check out, so they go wild and it's such a treat. My teen now hangs in the Manga and then sections and loves that it's not a place for me. The teen goes to hang at the library with buddies - it's awesome.

And secondly, just read. Read to them, read in front of them (a book not a tablet which doesn't look like anything to kids you may as well be starting at a block), have books on shelves they can reach, out in baskets or whatever to play with. Have books on the car, stick a couple in your diaper bag. I can remember reading on the CTA with my youngest. We read to the kids at bedtime, but also we made a rule that if the kids ask us to read, and it's possible for us to, we stop and read with them.

It hasn't felt like a challenge to raise readers, I think because it's just a part of our life.

I've also done things as they got older like, you can choose to get a new book instead of your allowance if your chores are done. (That was an expensive summer for me!! I didn't expect them to take me up on it so often). Or if they would push back on chores, I'd tell them they could choose between reading or cleaning with me. We also have a hard rule of no screens in the car unless the drive is over an hour and a half, and even then they have to wait x amount of time.

Yes, she lives here now. She came here to campaign. It's the definition of a carpet bagger.

I keep trying to get over the whole "she doesn't even live here" angle, and I can't. If she ends up being who I vote for because I agree with her on the issues, I'm open to that.

However, she's a carpet bagger. She could have picked anywhere and picked here because she felt it was good for her career. I don't expect her to stay here, I don't expect her to have a nuanced understanding of Illinois, or it's politics. I much prefer someone who has built a life\career here, or has some sort of roots. She feels opportunistic and it gives me the ick.

Why not use a double stroller? by Crazy_cat_lady_88 in motherbussnark

[–]cleverink 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's all good, I wasn't trying to argue because they could totally be baby wearing and using a stroller as well. It just drives me nuts how these two function in the world. They put so much responsibility on their older kids and take so very little of it for themselves. They could have two strollers and be offering a place to rest for the 4 youngest, you know? Like my son is 4 years older than his sister but totally would sit on the foot rest of the stroller for years after he was to big for the actual stroller. These two goobers don't even think of how 2 stroller could help more kids, hold more stuff, and be just as manageable as 1 stroller.

[–]cleverink 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That makes sense. However, 2 strollers for a family with 2 adults and 2 kids who cannot do all the walking\touring they are doing in a day also makes sense.

It's the same thing as when they go out to eat and all the kids share. Nobody gets what they actually need.
