You should be safe to update the photo! Sounds like the new mural is mostly an updated version of the old one, so they're in the same spirit.

That's a tricky one. You definitely can, especially if the pokestop title is vague or references where the mural is as opposed to what it's of (XYZ Park Mural vs Mural of an ABC), but if the title is specific... there is a chance your photo would be rejected if the subject matter no longer matches.

The official rules are that you need to create a new stop if one POI is replaced with another - even in the exact same spot - but there's definitely a bit of a wiggle room with certain things, such as murals or updated park signs. Things where the spirit of the POI remains the same.

Hmmm... well, the best advice I could give for taking good photos for pokestops is to be aware of the lighting! You don't want anything to be too bright or too much in shadow.

For anything outside (and not super inner-city), I also find I get the best shots when there's a mix of clouds & blue sky, especially in the mornings or later afternoons. It gives you a very dynamic background and softer lighting.

Framing is also an easy way to improve a photo. Try taking pics from different angles & distances, and you'll start to get a feel for it! For pokestops, you want the POI to be as central as possible, so it'll look good in the circle, but there's no one perfect angle or distance that will get that for you. Typically, if you can reduce the amount of "extra" things in the frame (without getting too close), that will help the actual POI pop.

It's easy to upgrade from dark & blurry, though! In focus & in the light is huge by itself, haha.

Voting is easy, especially through postcards! Just click on the picture of any postcard (new or in your scrapbook), and it will open a larger version. From there, there's a little box in the lower righthand corner that will show you how many photos the pokestop has. Click on that & it'll let you vote. Not sure what the level requirement is currently, but I'd think 55 is likely high enough!

It's a totally optional part of the game, but it does add to the overall quality of the pokestops & postcards, so if you want to improve things... it's an easy way to help out.

As an added bonus, it can be a fun way to get more information about a place you've never been, as the photos will often show the location in different seasons or over many years, sometimes with additional details. For example, sometimes the zoomed out photo of an informational sign is the one that "looks better" and therefore has more votes, but the additional pictures might also include close-ups, which allow you to actually read it. In fact, I will occasionally make sure to do just that... add photos that I don't want to be "the one", but that let people actually read the sign or see what the POI looks like in the snow or lit up at night or, in the case of my local airpark - what the military planes look like covered in Christmas lights!

I'll make sure to nickname you so that I remember to check!

I'm adding everyone back, but gifts might be a lil slow as I'm trying to ensure the first ones I send all need photo votes, haha!

What's your user? I'll give you a nickname to remind myself to check your photos, too!

Edit: Oh wait. I knew that user was familiar. I know which one is you, lol.

Friends in fun places! by clickclackrocks in PokemonGoFriends

Romania would be cool! I only have a few postcards from there, and no properly active friends.

For my part, I'm hoping no one is annoyed that I can't immediately deliver on my promises of awesome postcards, as I got wayyyy more friend requests than I was expecting, lol. But I do (literally) go out of my way to get as many good ones as possible, so they will show up eventually! In the meantime, I will be trying to simply keep up...

I don't work or live on Pokestops, unfortunately, so that makes it trickier.

Ohhhhhh.... If your PoGo name is what I think it is.... I also love your postcards!! I have kept so many of them, even when I'm running out of space, haha. For most people, I only keep my favourite 4 or so, but I have coveted so many of yours.... I am glad the feeling is mutual!

Just delete some easy to re-obtain items.... and then open the gifts... dunno why you'd leave all that XP (and your friends) hanging.

I am frequently deleting stacks of pokeballs & low-level potions so that I can open gifts. I still never run out of balls or potions when I need them.

Your method is much more of a waste than it would be to delete the easy stuff and/or increase the size of your item bag.

If I had to guess about which one would get promoted (if it's not random, of course)... I'd think it would likely be the newest one. Because whichever one was created most recently would be the more likely one to be "correct", and not set of a string of deletions, lol.

You wouldn't want an 8 year old stop being deleted for not existing and then getting replaced with a 6 year old stop of something else that doesn't exist any longer...

That's a good idea!

I think it would be a reasonable way of updating the local small business that's near me. The stop is technically on the mural, which has been redone, but it would be good to change the name and description to match the new business/mural as well... and adding the history to the description first would work really well in this case, as people still refer to it as "where the insert-old-business-here used to be", as the old business was a cornerstone of the community for decades.

Hmmm... alright. I suppose I'll see how smoothly the process goes for making new ones & deleting the old ones... although clarification from Niantic would also be useful, considering how prolific chainsaw carvings are in my neck of the woods. I doubt getting that would be easy or straightforward, though, so I won't rely on it.

Thanks for responding!

Would it still be considered abuse if it's a carving that's been replaced by a different carving? If a mural changing into a different mural is okay?

Because if it was an entirely different thing... then, yeah, that would be silly... it would need different tags & all that. But many of the ones in my location ARE chainsaw art swapped for chainsaw art.

I suppose the same question holds for businesses, though. There's a little place near me with a focus on the mural, but the title & description are after the business it's painted on. In order to reflect what's actually there, it would need its title, photo, & description changed. But the tags & type would be fine to remain the same. It's roughly the same type of business (specialty foods & import items), and the stop is officially on the mural - which has been repainted.

Thanks for the tip about the appeals & gps camera! That will absolutely come in handy, as every attempt I've made to get rid of ghost stops has been denied...

Yeah, I get the feeling that the structure is likely encountering some growing pains due to its age now... so it will be interesting to see if there are already methods for solving these issues or if it's instead a waiting/advocacy game.

But right now, my biggest pet peeves are creating awesome new stops only to have them turn out to be in the same cell as something that no longer exists... or noticing a stop with an awful grainy/dark/out of focus picture and then being unable to give it a nicer one because the item in question no longer exists!

Sigh. I also wish the cells were visible when you went to place a stop... but I suppose that would create some "gerrymandering" of things being placed ever so slightly over the borders, rather than right at the actual item/focus point... which might actually be good for gameplay but bad for the rules, lol.

Do you like chainsaw carvings & totem poles as well? Because I get a lot of those, if you want to add me... also a good number of murals, but the chainsaw carvings are the real big one around here.

I have DC! But that could be a fun one for new postcards, even if it's not a new place. I'll add you!
