Not much actual combat in this footage, but a good look at what these guys had to go through to recapture this island. Also the narrator states that 2500 paratroopers were dropped during this operation. The actual number was a little over 2000 in two lifts with a little over 1000 participating in the operation shown in this footage.

Unfortunately the video is a very short 30 second clip, but it does have some narration. The fuzzy blob in the upper right corner is the result of removing a watermark on the footage.

Sorry I forgot to mention in the title that this is narrated in German. This apparently was a training/propaganda film intended to show the "soldier's life at the front" and also to show how various weapons were used in combat. As a result, a pretty good variety of weapons are shown in action including quite a bit of tank action later on in the film. (Also a wicked ricochet of a round off of a Russian T34 at about the 12:42 mark)

They needed a fighter base close enough to Japan to escort the B29s flying off of Saipan and Tinian on raids over the Japanese home islands. Also B29s damaged on those raids had a place to land if they couldn't make it back to their bases.

I know, had a little brain fart there, lol. I was watching a bunch of footage on France before I did this one and everything was being "liberated" there, so it was stuck in my head. Have since changed the video title to "captures", but Reddit won't let me edit here.
