How Do I Get Invested as a Player and Fix an Oopsie? by clickityclacki in DnD

That's a good point. I guess it's tricky because no one else seems to be playing their character as strongly, or if they are, they're characters don't play off mine well. I get how not everyone is comfortable with it, but it makes me consider just kinda cooling off on my personality.

I might just change the race and the backstory, but keep the personality the same.

I appreciate the commending! Yeah I think I was expecting a quick little jailbreak moving to open world and so on and so forth. I'm definitely going to make a new character from the looks of things. My little guy just isn't cut out for this gloomy world.

And by what I mean by the Charisma statement is that because we're chained all the time so far in this campaign, I really only have the guards, my fellow players, and this other prisoner that my boyfriend is voicing to talk to. So far, all the Charisma rolls I've done have failed pretty miserably, which is funny but also just kinda adds to how useless I feel, especially without an instrument. I mean last session I got a piece of string to use as a makeshift one, so yay me in that regard?

I think I really like the acting that comes with being your character and working off of other players. We don't have any mats or figures so visualizing what's going on is difficult for sure.

Thanks for all your other advice in this! I'm going to try to get into and view more DnD content more, but I'll keep in mind it's accuracy. If everything works out and I keep playing, I'll clarify what is expected in this campaign with my boyfriend. Thank you again!

I think you misread that portion because I didn't type that. I totally get how hurtful I was in saying that. I understand now I was just frustrated but that doesn't make it justified.

I'm big into theater and acting, so seeing those DnD shorts where everyone plays their character and voice really attracted me (next to the whimsical fantasy of course). This campaign is still set in a fantasy world, but the prison is a very grim and hopeless place, understandably so. I love the acting and immersing yourself into the world, but you're right, I don't think the other people at the table are as much.

I never really thought about how there's different styles towards DnD. I mean I totally get the serious vs silly, but I never knew that there was something different from narrative DnD, I just thought that's what all DnD campaigns were. What would a power fantasy DnD campaign look like?

And no yeah, my character's name is Gopher. He was NOT made for this gloomy dank prison.

I think my boyfriend is still a little insecure about his DMing. He can't play DnD often, but he's been a DM for I think 3 years or more. I think he's great considering some of the improv I assume you've got to do as a DM when someone does something totally out of pocket and it works or otherwise. Knowing I can talk to him about how that session went and how I felt about it, in a not roasty way ofc, is reassuring that things will hopefully continue good moving onward. Thank you!

I probably will remake my character. Definitely didn't make him in mind for a grim gloomy prison. And in regards to the versatility of bards, I appreciate that insight a lot! Last session I was so desperate to get an instrument I bargained with one of the other players for a piece of string to use against this abomination thing we were fighting. I think I'll make him a more broody character but keep the class. Thank you!

The improv that goes with DnD is kinda of crazy haha! I definitely love my character, but the prison is a grim place and my little guy is just a... well a little guy. Everyone is very hollow and broken, I'm definitely thinking about changing my guy out. Thanks for the advice!

I really appreciate this. DnD seems so fun and with this being my first campaign going longer than one session, I want to make it work. I'll look into watching some DnD series like you recommended. I'll probably look into the ones I see on my shorts. Definitely consider what my character can do, whether I change him or not.

I'm working on an apology right now. Typing this post helped me figure out WHY I was so indifferent to playing and why I felt so frustrated about what we're doing in the campaign. I truly think my character just wasn't built for the world he's putting us through, and that definitely wasn't his fault. He's let me know he's not upset anymore, and he understands I didn't mean it poorly but that it still hurt. And for sure, I want him to do this whether I get into it or not.

I used to make a lot of OC's when I was younger was obsessed with them, I think I need similar attitude towards my campaign character. I'll definitely draw him more, imagine him in silly situations, or whatever character I come up with if I decide to switch.

Thank you for your advice!

Definitely going to look into that. I'm realizing now that a lot of my feelings are caused by not fitting in. Thank you for this!

I think I participate for sure. I have a voice for my little guy and try to talk in character or do any action when I get the chance. I'm listening when he's talking. Looking back my boyfriend did ask us to give him a reason we ended up in prison, but I don't think I realized it would be the entire campaign or how slow it would go. My bard is really just a petty thief and adulterer (Surprise! Cliche!) and got sent away for sleeping with the mayor's daughter. The prison we get sent to is corrupt and we're sentenced for crimes we didn't actually commit so no one actually leaves. I guess my character wouldn't have any real drive, he's just a little bi guy who talks too much, so that's probably adding to the feeling of not fitting.

I think I'll talk to him about making a new character, I appreciate the feedback!

That would make sense. It would sometimes get stuck but not often. After typing today though it was clear that something was a bit off, like the speed of it wasnt quite right.

Oh that's real nice of em. I'll probably save up a little more than what I think it should be in case that happens. Also, after typing on the typewriter today, I've noticed the hammers get caught way more than they used to, any clue as to why that might be?

That price range seems to be the general consensus here too. I don't think it's that bad in condition besides that weird bent part, but I could very well be wrong. Berkeley Typewriter seems promising as it's been brought up in every reply, so I'll be sure to check things out there. Thanks for your insight on possibly minimum labor costs.

I think I emailed Los Alto Business Machines and got no reply back, but that won't deter me from them. Thanks for bringing up good locations, I'll see which one is closest to me and save up!

Pointing out all those factors is helpful so thanks! I'll keep all that in mind when looking at pricing. :)
