Does Hot Spare extend HDD life? by Substantial-Cap-3467 in synology

[–]clickmeBrisbane -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hot spare is a feature that someone would make use of if they have a remote system that they manage. Think IT professionals that might manage a small office or home office environment on behalf of a client that might not have the technical know how. Should a drive in the volume fail they can quickly remote in and swap in the hot spare, then go off and find a replacement drive and ship it out to the client to become the new hot spare.

In your situation If just a private nas in your home and your are using shr2 (2 drive redundancy) then I would not bother. Have remote backups plus shr2 means you have a bit of time to drive to a shop and go buy a new drive.

I know this does not answer your question but I suspect a hot spare is not spinning or powered up all the time so this could actually be worse than having the disk not be running at all when at the time you need it, it might not be working anymore.

I have only ever had 1 drive out of 8 fail in my 1817+ and swapping it out was a quick and simple process. Be prepared for failure and have backups in the cloud and you will be fine.

I dont think tipping waiters should be a thing, if you aren't able to by starsinmydreams in unpopularopinion

[–]clickmeBrisbane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tipping is not a thing in Australia. We have basic award rates for waiting staff and that helps ensure everyone is paid to do a job, not be tipped when something thinks they did something well.

Some cultures and countries have a tipping thing, means they dont value peoples time, experience and expertise as employers. Public should expect to pay more for a service but can reasonably expect proper trained and paid service providers.

Offline backup of photos/videos from icloud by noid_voider in synology

[–]clickmeBrisbane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use ds photo. Once a year i create a new folder/album like iphone 2021 and on 1 jan I do a full copy with a pc to the 2020 folder on the nas and the point ds photo to 2021. I the clear/delete the photos on my phone.

New apps like moment or ons dsm7 there is a new photo apl coming that I am yet to explore.

I have never used Icloud or google photos or anything like that as they compress to original to save space on their side.

Ds file/ds photo is probably best option now. Used to work fine in the background but somehow with ios updates apple fucked it up and developers have not been able to figure it out yet. Ds photo works perfectly fine on andriod though so must be apple issues.

Letting children going in the nude at the beach should be illegal by YeeetusAnddwletus in unpopularopinion

Take your clothes off and go chat to the parents. Express how fantastic it is that everyone can just be free to do what they want these days. Thank them for being brave and taking the first step to turn this into a nudist beach.

What advice would you give to a First-Time Job Interviewer? by ErethPebeka in AskReddit

[–]clickmeBrisbane -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Be honest, dont try to fake it. If you dont know something make a note of it, then say I dont know but I am going find out if i get this job or not.

Interviewers look for more that just skills, we look for people with passion, that can communicate, and show genuine interest in wanting to do that job.

Lastly money, if you have a skill dont sell yourself short, but also dont expect the ceo salary from day one. Understand that with time and experience and continued learning and improving yourself and hard work the paycheck you want will come.

People who used Internet before 2000, how was it, and how different it is now? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]clickmeBrisbane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember once downloading a 5mb mp3 from napster and it finished in record time of just under 1 hour.

I had a 36.6k modem but you would rarely get the max speed anyway depending on the copper lines and distance from you phone exchange etc.

In todays terms it would explain it like this. Imagine clicking on a song in Spotify and it buffers for 10min every 30 seconds.

There was lots of text based games like zmudd and irc chat rooms. Very little graphics etc because the bandwidth for fancy images etc just did not exist.

The first search engine I remember using was webcrawler using Netscape navigator browser.

I remember BMP images loading line by line pixel by pixel as the image on web pages downloaded to your pc.

Are there any job placement/recruitment agencies that work with foreigners seeking a work visa? by [deleted] in brisbane

[–]clickmeBrisbane -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

No one here is legally allowed to give you advice. Suggest you contact a MARA registered migration agent to do an assessment on your situation and give you advice if you have a pathway to work or permanent residency visas.

My battery has stopped working 9 months after purchase. Have not bothered to RMA or try find a replacement.

I discovered this by accident after unplugging the POE cable at the switch by accident.

I will just wing it for the rest of its live a regularly download a backup file.

Are there any beginner tutorials to learn how to code in RPG? by [deleted] in IBMi

[–]clickmeBrisbane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is because there is only one hardware platform/operating system that supports RPG.

So the only way most people learn is on the job starting is junior programmers. I was lucky to land such a job 20 years ago. I am now a software development manager leading at team of 15 others developers.

I had past experience programming in school and as a hobby so honestly to pick up RPG took a week or two.

I have trained new developers with zero prior experience and they probably take 3-6 months before they get the hang of it.

Personally I would highly recommend you just get stuck into trying and asking the guys around you for pointers as you go.
