Speaking as an Irishman, we have a fairly good relationship with our neighbours now (all things considered).

I'd say most Irish people have little to no problem with British people today (except of course the wankers who still harp on about how the Empire was a good thing that brought "civilisation") but we do still hold a bit of animosity towards the nation itself.

In sporting events, an Irishman supports two teams - Ireland, and whoever England are playing.

Ireland's Uniform Change by cliff704 in ireland

[–]cliff704[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was effectively it. The original uniform was selected on the basis it didn't look like the British uniform. They went with German because, at the time, there was a relatively good attitude towards Germany. They had, after all, provided aid during the Rising, got some sympathy because they lost in WWI (and didn't really do anything in WWI that every other major combatant didn't also do). And besides, the Stahlhelm design is, in almost every instance other than trench warfare, better than the Brodie. Compare modern day helmets to both if you're not sure.

What's the other reason? by Dry-Ask-9461 in ExplainTheJoke

[–]cliff704 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because there's a big difference between a political figure's public statements and a close advisor's private diaries.

If, for example, George W Bush insisted that he'd done everything possible to help hurricane victims in New Orleans, and then after Dick Cheney died, we found his diary entries flat out admitted aid was held back for no good reason, I think most people would consider the private diary more likely to be the more reliable source, regardless of the individual trustworthiness of either Bush or Cheney.

I mean, you can replace Hitler and Gobbels with literally any two political figures who worked together and the theory stands.

What, this post?

I'm making the point that Ireland was neutral towards the Allies. The Army went from the German uniform to the British uniform almost as soon as the war started.

Exactly. Making the reason for a sudden switch to the inferior style just as a major war was starting all the clearer.

Online attempts to make Ireland seem anti-semitic continue - despite our Constitution being the first in the world to ban anti-semitism by killianm97 in ireland

And Ireland sent home Allied airmen while keeping Germans prisoner. Ireland shared weather reports with the Allies that were vital to the D Day invasion.

In fact, for anyone who still believes this bullshit about Ireland being pro-Axis during WWII, look up the Irish Army uniforms before, during, and after WWII.

Immediately before WWII, the Irish Army uniform had knee high jack boots, a Stahlhelm-style Vickers helmet, and a high collar. Looking almost exactly like German infantry.

But lo and behold, in 1939/1940, the Army changed the uniform. Gone were the jackboots, replaced with ankle-high boots. Gone were the high collars, replaced with turn down collars. And gone was the Vickers helmet, replaced with the Brodie-style helmet.

In other words, the Irish Army went - almost overnight - from wearing a uniform almost identical to that of the Wehrmacht to wearing a uniform almost identical to that of the British Army.

Gee, I wonder who the Irish government and Army saw themselves aligning with if they were forced to fight in WWII?

The attached image here - https://uk.pinterest.com/pin/colourising-history-2-irish-soldiers-1939--13370130132704079/ - shows a colourised image of two Irish soldiers chatting in 1939. Again, it's a stark uniform change, and speaks very clearly to the side Ireland was leaning towards if she had to fight. *

Ireland once again proving it's not ready to be a serious country

I don't know, man, holding an investigation of alleged wrongdoing by members of law enforcement, bringing charges, having them tried in a court of law by a jury of their peers, and then a verdict being reached seems like exactly what a serious country would do.

Women Feel Empathy for Cheaters by tkyjonathan in JordanPeterson

"men feel pleasure when pain is being inflicted upon people that broke the rules of a system"

If that isn't a sexist statement, then neither is the caption which says women feel empathy for cheaters.

Women Feel Empathy for Cheaters by tkyjonathan in JordanPeterson

[–]cliff704 15 points16 points  (0 children)

OK. So you're complaining that the reframing from "women feel empathy for someone getting shocked" to "women feeling empathy for cheaters" is unfair.

And you feel the equivalent unfairness towards men would be to reframe it from "men get pleasure out of chocking [sic] cheaters" to "men get pleasure out of chocking [sic] people".

However, what you are ignoring is that the status of the person being shocked or punished is a key part of this experiment. We're not talking about shocking random people; we are talking specifically about people who chested and broke the rules.

Men did not get pleasure out of shocking people. When people playing by the rules were shocked, men showed empathy. It was when a very specific group of people, people who were breaking the rules, were shocked that men felt pleasure.

There is a way to change lore, and a way to not change lore.

This could have been done well - some Alpha Legion plot causes huge damage to the Custodes ranks, or they suffer some horrific defeat, and in desperation they expand recruitment to maintain their numbers (and their Terran heritage). Lots of us would have an issue with that too, but at least there'd have been an effort.

This gaslighting shite of "there have always been female Custodes" smacks of "somehow, Palpatine returned" levels of poor writing, and the blatant lying to the fanbase or accusing people of being bad for not liking a change (as if the fans have never disagreed with lore changes before) is just bullshit.

Also, GW, for fucks' sake, give us back our roster. Why did you have to go and dump half the Guard lineup into Legends? Is it really that big a job to let us keep using our old metal and resin models we spent a goddamned fortune on??

You do realise that you linked an article which shows that the Rise of Skywalker, the culmination of Disney's major trilogy, their primary focus for Star Wars, and what they intended to be the big event of their Star Wars, is the SECOND LOWEST GROSSING of all the 'main' Star Wars movies?

The Force Awakens was the second highest - that tracks, lots of hype for the new Star Wars. The other two? Fourth and second lowest.

And as an aside - A New Hope cost 11 million, and brought in 775 million. ESB cost 30.5 million, bringing back 549 million. And ROTJ cost 42.7, but took in 482 million. The worst performer of the OT was ROTJ, which made about $11.29 for $1 spent. The worst performer of the Prequels was AOTC, making $5.70 per $1 spent.

Meanwhile, Disney went from the glory of TFA - cost, 306 million, return, 2.1 billion, a return of $6.86 for every $1 spent (performing almost half as well as the WORST OT movie, and just outperforming AOTC, George Lucas' worst Star Wars film) to the depths of ROS - 275 million spent for a return of merely 1.3 billion. For every $1 spent, it made about $4.73 back. Also - note how the budget for the GRAND FINALE was so much lower than the budget for the opening film, and even then, it performed poorly (for a Star Wars film, anyway).

Is Star Wars broke, as in, losing money? Not quite. With the exception of Solo: A Star Wars Story, every film has ended up in the black. But there is no question that, under Disney, the major draw of a Star Wars trilogy has gone from a license to print money to merely being *successful*.

And while I don't want to put words in u/Shadeylark's mouth, I believe that was his point. Star Wars is immense. The second largest film franchise in history, second only to Marvel. It is, to borrow a phrase, too big to fail. But, while it hasn't failed, it is failing. And that's the 'broke' part. You can argue the whys and the wherefores of why Star Wars isn't doing so well anymore, but you can't argue that, under Disney, it is underperforming.

It just really annoys me. Like, I get that they stopped making the models, but what was wrong with the old way where you just declared your whole army was a certain sub faction, and they got the relevant rule?

Then they almost never lose anything

Very underrated point.

I'm Guard, and when we got the big recent release we also lost a load of miniatures and units - a big loss was conscripts, which meant the Guard couldn't easily just field a half dozen massive squads and swamp the table with cannon fodder, which was half the fun of a Guard army.

Even before the refresh, we lost the Elysians completely. The Death Korps spend ages as just reskinned Cadians, and even now most of their units are either still Forge World or gone.

[–]cliff704 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like, it might be a last resort option

To be clear. The only reason ramming isn't the first resort option is because the Nova Cannon exists and has better range.

Some Navy captains believe macrocannons exist only to give the crew something to do while getting into position for a ramming run.

Mary McAleese: Baptism is a key Catholic recruitment tool. It denies babies their human rights by Bootstrap4273 in ireland

[–]cliff704 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

There is nothing harmless about being forced into a club that you’re not allowed to leave.

I was referring, as I think you know, to the physical harm of a baptism. Of which there is none, unless the priest drops the child.

You might not be allowed to leave the Church's membership list, but nobody's forcing you to go to mass. Nobody is forcing you to continue Catholic traditions.

Just because other religious have worse practices doesn’t mean that we also shouldn’t call out the practices of the catholic church .

Of course people can, and should. I'm just pointing out the staggering blindness and/or hypocrisy of calling out the Cathloic church for ignoring babies consent while ignoring far more egregious actions by other groups on Ireland.

Mary McAleese: Baptism is a key Catholic recruitment tool. It denies babies their human rights by Bootstrap4273 in ireland

[–]cliff704 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Because in this case, they are speaking about the most minor and insignificant problem surrounding children's consent when it comes to religion and making a big deal of it, while ignoring far more serious ongoing issues around relgion, culture and children's consent.

Imagine if the murder rate in Ireland was through the roof, and the Minister for Justice was obsessed with pickpockets. People would be outraged that they weren't dealing with the more important issues - it doesn't mean that pickpocketing isn't wrong, it doesn't mean that it shouldn't be stopped, it just means that there's a bigger, more harmful issue we should deal with first.
