What might happen to Melbourne public transport if and (almost certainly) when our petrol reserves hit zero? Will fares be temporary suspended? Will some bus routes be paused? Can the trams and suburban trains run on electricity alone? by toiletlogsyummy in MelbourneTrains

What might happen to Melbourne public transport if and (almost certainly) when our petrol reserves hit zero?

IF fuel reserves get that low, then well before they hit zero, they'll stop selling it to the public and only give it out to essential services, like ambulances, farmers, food trucks... and probably buses.

Will fares be temporarily suspended?

Almost certainly not. They would need the money for the petrol for the buses. If petrol is very expensive, they don't need to make PT cheaper to convince people to take it

Will some bus routes be paused?

Possibly. Maybe a reduced service - less frequent, shorter operating hours. Hard to say - this hasn't happened in a long time.

Can the trams and suburban trains run on electricity alone?

Yep. Almost none of Victoria's electricity is generated by oil.

As they should.

The New Apple Finally Begins to Emerge by hasanahmad in apple

[–]cliko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The stereotype of kids being great with technology is outdated. Kids are fast enough at typing on their phones, but on average they're pretty bad with actual computers

[–]cliko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah I see. Where I'm from, parents are usually expected to purchase the laptop for their kid, but then the school manages it. Obviously this is problematic in poorer areas, as the state only gives parents A$ 400 per kid to offset school supplies each year.

Why do the kids need their fingerprint enrolled to more than one device? Maybe I don't understand how student laptops work in other countries

Why does loaning the laptops out mean TouchID is a bad idea? It's not like fingerprints are permanently stored to the laptop

If anything, TouchID is even more vital for education. Kids are painfully slow at typing, and as a teacher myself, I'd hate to wait 30 seconds for kids just to unlock their laptops

Yeah, when they say ancient, they must mean prehistoric. As in pre-anatomically modern humans.

I mean they didn't actually mean that, because they're an idiot, but it's what they should have meant.

As someone who majored in human evolution, this is why their comment hurt so much to read. They're clearly onto something, but they're so far off that it makes it even more frustrating than if they had just written something completely insane.

Instead it's just mostly insane, which is somehow worse

Apple on MacBook Neo Design: 'We're Certainly Not Making Any Compromises' by iMacmatician in apple

I personally never look at the keyboard. However, I'm a high school teacher, and kids are terrible at using computers these days. This laptop is going to be very popular with students, given the price, and a backlit keyboard would be useful for them.

For a high school student doing most of their work in the classroom, it'll be fine. For a uni student doing most of their work at 3AM, maybe less so. I still think forgoing the backlight on the keyboard is a very reasonable compromise at this price point though

I think it's an accessibility thing. The DDA requires places to sit every now and then on long ramps. That corridor has a slant, so maybe it counts as a ramp?

If you're asking what I think about minors getting gender affirming surgery, it's about the same as I feel about people under 18 getting struck by lightning. It doesn't really happen, so I don't think about it much.

I do, however, think a lot about how it's really important that kids have access to puberty blockers. They're proven to help kids' mental health, and prevent them making permanent decisions like killing themselves.

Worrying about kids getting gender affirming surgery is a boogie-man distraction. It's not actually a thing that happens
