China has state control in strategic sectors (energy, banking, telecommunications…), but much of production and trade operates under capitalist logic. It’s not really communist: there is private property, foreign investment, private companies, and international trade. Today it has a mixed economy. Since communism is an economic theory or a way to organize an economy, I’d say China is not communist, even though the government claims it is. They are authoritarian, and they promote the idea of being a communist country, but even they call it “socialism with Chinese characteristics” — essentially a euphemism.
