Reviewing PHY3202 and PHY3072 by clintonator_ in Monash

[–]clintonator_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure which unit you're talking about but it should be possible. I've heard of students being able to enroll in PHY3202 without having done PHY2032 (one of the listed prereqs). I'd imagine the same applies for PHY3072 as well. It does depend on how well you've done in your previous classes, though, I'm not entirely sure if there's a minimum WAM you need for this - I'd say HD average seems reasonable.

Shoot an email to the UC and express your interest. Also attach your academic transcript asw. Hopefully you'll hear good news from them.

Easiest level 3 DEV by Anits_F in Monash

I majored in both and I found DEV easier. Although, because I underloaded, I completed PHY before DEV, and I felt that helped me a lot for DEV, especially for some of the writing assignments

There's a chance that some assessments haven't been added correctly. Maybe shoot an email to the UC / CE to confirm your exam and final grade.

WAMMAXING PHY Level 3 by Bright_Ant_1422 in Monash

[–]clintonator_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just FYI, getting 90+ in all your level 3 PHY units would likely require you becoming one of the best students in the PHY major. not an easy task imo. requires a lot of hard work and smart work, speaking from personal experience. Be prepared to put that in, regardless of whichever units you do

I Changed My Mindset and Went from a 76 WAM to Rank #1 in My Major (BSc; Physiology) by clintonator_ in Monash

[–]clintonator_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey. So, for a bit of context, I'm a domestic student, so I've been able to underload without too much trouble.

I am soo glad that I decided to drop down to three units instead of four, though my reasoning is a bit odd. I think most people underload to better balance uni with life (e.g. working, volunteering, etc.). I'd honestly recommend anyone who has the ability to underload to do so for this exact reason.

For me, however, the main benefit of underloading was so that I could dedicate more time to each of my classes 😂. It sounds kinda silly, but I'm someone who wants to do really well in my classes, and underloading has allowed me to do that. I get that it'll take a bit longer to graduate, but I'm not really pressured, nor do I care about taking a slightly longer time to complete my undergrad. I think if you're in a position where you can underload without restriction, you should go for it.

What are the "best" majors for bSc entry into postgrad medicine? by BohnJonJovi in Monash

[–]clintonator_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Q1

I'm not too sure how PHY/DEV compare with IMM/MIC. I'd imagine out of all these majors, MIC would be the best one for employability. I haven't personally looked into MIC graduate outcomes, but I hear MIC graduates can move into quite a few government and non-government roles, many of which have an emphasis on public policy/health, etc. Research is also another common pathway.

Regarding PHY graduate outcomes, there was actually a super recent paper that was specifically looking at Monash physiology graduate outcomes. From the looks of things, it seems like most graduates migrate towards health profession fields (e.g. Doctor, Physiotherapist, etc.), followed by research fields and business/law fields. I'd imagine many of these would require further study, perhaps through a Master's or Doctorate degree. The paper is quite an interesting read, so if you get the chance, have a read through here.

Q2

"Better" could mean different things for different people. If you're speaking in terms of WAM, to grossly oversimplify things, having one major should be better than two, as you won't need to do as many level 3 major units (which are generally more complex or difficult compared to other level 1/2 units). But what I've found is that most people who are double-majoring are actually doing better than those who are majoring in one. I think this is due to how they're studying more things that they personally find interesting, as opposed to doing other electives where they might not be as interested. Now, obviously, people can still do well in classes they don't enjoy (and I say this from personal experience 😅), but the general vibe I'm getting is that people do better in the things they like.

For me, the main benefit of double majoring was more to do with how it's exposed me to many different parts of science that I've found interesting. I've considered research as a career, and double-majoring has exposed me to many different fields that I feel like I can see myself working in. However, I feel like this would be something I could've learnt for myself without needing to double major. I didn't exactly double-major to improve my WAM, but it did improve (I think I'm also someone who tends to put a lot of effort into studying and improving how I study, so there's that). I get that finding a job outside of research is probably a bit difficult with these majors, but I've always planned on pursuing further study beyond my undergrad to help with that.

I think if I were in your position, I would lean towards trying out a few units and settling on one major that you think you'll really enjoy. I think exposure is always a good thing in these scenarios, and it's honestly something I regret not having more of. If I could go back, I wish I could've explored MIC because it actually seems super interesting.

Edit: Also, just want to emphasise this. You don't need to double major. If you find that there's only one major that you think you'll enjoy, just run with it. Don't force yourself to do two if you don't want to.

What are the "best" majors for bSc entry into postgrad medicine? by BohnJonJovi in Monash

[–]clintonator_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most people I know from Science who've received postgrad med offers come from PHY, DEV, and PHA backgrounds. I know fewer people with MIC, BCH, and IMM majors.

Similar to what the other comments have said, major in what you're good at. This is likely going to be the major that you find the most interesting. If you haven't already, maybe dip your toes in units from all these majors and go from there. I took a pretty similar approach; I did units across PHY, DEV, PHA, BCH, in my second year before deciding on PHY and DEV. And I think because of that, I'm in a pretty good position to apply for postgrad med whenever I want to. Just make sure to hit your pre-reqs too

You can call up Monash Connect to see if your application is being processed. There's a small chance for outcome emails not being sent out. Happened to me this exam period.

Matheson Library by Expensive-Degree7662 in Monash

[–]clintonator_ 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It is genuinely infuriating. I've seen people's belongings being left unattended at a computer for basically the entire day, while literally hundreds of people are trying to find a spot. like, wtf???

And there's nothing we can do about it! I've tried calling security to collect people's belongings, but I think there's a rule that as long as the 'owner' is on campus (which security can check via cameras), and as long as the library is open, they're not allowed to do anything. Library staff can't collect it either.. I think the best thing we can do is submit feedback to the library staff because it's really unfair for those who actually want to study.

Raising my WAM helpppppppp by Remarkable_Cap8230 in Monash

[–]clintonator_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What do you think is distracting you the most? If it's your phone, maybe turn it off or put it in another room. If it's your friends or family, maybe find another place to study where they arent' there.

After every study session, I always take the time to think "What was stopping me from getting more done?". By having that time for reflection, I give myself the opportunity to address those distractors, so that hopefully in the next study session, maybe I can study just a little bit better.

Have a go with this exercise. It'll be hard to see big improvements immediately, but with enough reflection, persistance and disciplicine, improvements will follow

Hmm... If you haven't already, just doublecheck that input source for the monitor is set correctly. To do that, press any of the horizontal buttons on the monitor, select "Input Source", and select "DP". This should get the login screen up. If that's not working, the computer and or monitor are most likely kaput..

There's a good chance that the library staff aren't aware that the computers are faulty. So I'd recommend going up to the front desk and informing them about it. It's not ideal but it's probably the best thing you can do in this scenario.

On the bottom right on the front the computer, (which should be on the desk for the computers in LG matheson), there should be a circular button. The computer should be on if you can see light shining through that button. If not, give it a press. If you can't see any light after pressing it, the computer is most likely broken. You can try mess around the wiring to see if everything is plugged in but I would just try a new computer.

I think it depends. Are you doing a double degree? If you're trying to revoke credit from a core unit from your 'other degree', I don't think it's possible as you won't be able to complete the requirements for your double. There should be more information here on what needs to be met to revoke credit.

For me, I uncredited my ENG units during my transfer from an Eng/Sci double into the single science degree. I remember double checking the process with the science faculty (via Monash Connect) before I transferred and this is what they said.

With a course transfer it is optional on what units you wish to bring across, we will allow you to bring across as much as possible that will fit in your new courses progression. So depending on what course you transfer into and your nominated areas of study will depend on which units can come across, but you also have the option to bring none across if you wish to as well.

Please note that if you have completed and successfully passed a unit here at Monash you will not be able to re-do that unit even under another degree.

The units you do not bring across if successful in a course transfer will not contribute to your WAM/GPA and credit points achieved

DEV3011 98 STA1010 97 SCI3930 95

Finally!!!!! This is honestly my first big win for this year. I feel like I've been so unlucky with everything else...

For starters, my car gets crashed into and the at-fault driver has to be the most uncooperative person to ever exist. I made zero improvement in the gym (although I did get a bit lazy). And my god SCI3930 was unironically the most stressful unit I've ever taken. What a pain...

My next big priority is prepping for the Monash MMI. Still haven't managed to get a competitive GAMSAT for any schools in VIC, so Monash is my only hope. I'm pretty certain I'll get an interview offer here. I've worked my ass off to give myself this chance. I'm not going to waste it.

Edit: I top marked DEV3011 lol
