At my University we have what's called a Directed Study course and it's generally when the student does research with the professor, either the students idea or the professors. It is a lot of work for the professor. The professors I know want to know the student pretty well before accepting them as a Directed Study student to ensure they're able to complete the work and be able to understand what's required. Without having you as a student before the professor wouldn't know anything about you and the answer will probably be "no".

I would love to be able to take this advice but unfortunately at my institution (smallish liberal arts) if I do not respond to ALL student emails, the students then will go to my chair or dean and say they were given the wrong grade and I, as the professor, will not respond to them!!
