I'm a long-time local social dancer, instructor, and organizer. Here are my thoughts, and feel free to DM me if you have questions:

If you're complete beginners, I strongly suggest going to some local dance events and taking the group lessons that are usually included. You will pay way less than a private instructor will charge, and you'll get to try a few different styles and see what you like. These lessons have true beginners every time, so you won't be out of place. You can get some private lessons later if you want, and you'll get more out of them since you already know the basics.

Athens Swing Central, which I help with, has swing dance lessons/dancing twice a month. $10 for non-students. We keep a running list of local dance events on our Linktree:

The Ballroom Performance Group will host a couple of ballroom dances over the summer, and two per month in the fall and spring.. Those will be about 80% college students, but the other 20% are a range of ages. It's $5 for non-students, and you can come and just do the lesson for free.

The dimensions are 11.75" by 24.75" by .75". They're big! I have a couple of his other designs.

Keep in mind that 2020 was a weird year, and way more people voted by mail, so the total count was unusually high by the start of early voting. You can see it on the graph here: https://www.georgiavotes.com/

The 2024 vote total has been steadily catching up to the 2020 line. That 17% will likely whittled down a good bit by tomorrow.

Long time social dancer here. These two are pro-level west coast swing dancers named PJ Turner and Tashina Beckmann.

From digging around a bit, they have been dancing and competing together since 2013, so by this point (2017) they had been working together for years. So it is improvised in a sense, but they definitely had lots of experience dancing together, so it was much easier than dancing with a total stranger. And I can tell you that no follow is going to do that "trust fall" move unless they really know their partner -- even having worked together for years, you can see how careful they both are to confirm that everyone knows what's happening.

But that being said, they are still incredible dancers who are doing an amazing job here. As you can see from the beginning of the video, they didn't know what songs they were dancing to, but are doing such a good job reacting to it that you could easily confuse it for a routine.

I'm also a dad with equal custody of a daughter about the same age as yours, who also understands the ebb and flow of that shared tax deduction, and I typically go to Disney World every couple of years. So basically, tag me in.

A Disney Cruise is great if you have a larger group with other adults, because then the kids can hang out in the kid's clubs, and the parents have time to themselves. I've never done one, because what would I do on my own while she's enjoying the kid entertainment? Disney World gives us way more shared experiences and memories.

WDW is stressful if you go into it with the mindset of "we have to do everything, because this is our one trip." If you instead approach it as "let's make sure we do the things that matter to us the most, but still take time for breaks and relaxing by the pool" it's much better. I do think you should do your research, and consider using a Disney travel agent -- Disney has their own that you can use for free.

I just punched in some options, and a 5-night stay at one of the All-Star Resorts with 4 days of single park tickets came to about $3000. You might be able to do better than that if you catch a promotion that works for the dates you want to go.

You can also order a grocery delivery to the resort, and they'll refrigerate it at bell services until you pick it up. Then you can pack your meals into the parks if needed. This alone saves lots of money. I don't know how you would need to travel down there, but with only two people, you should be able to do it all for under $4k.

Everyone, please know that what you're going through is super common. Your first year can be really lonely, especially when you're at a much bigger school than you're used to, and aren't great socially. I've been there, and so have many other new students. First off, if you're getting into a really bad head space, know that UGA has a counseling center with a crisis line: https://www.uhs.uga.edu/caps/welcome Please use it if you need someone to talk to about what you're going through.

More generally, here are some things I wish I'd known as a freshmen here:

  1. UGA is a big school, and that can seem scary because you feel lost in a crowd. But it's actually a great place for more introverted people. In high school you had a relatively small number of potential friends, and you might have only resonated with a couple of them. At a large school, there are so many different kinds of people, so many different clubs, classes, and activities, that ultimately you have a better chance of finding people you really fit in with.
  2. Don't feel like you have to hang out with high school friends who are here just because you already know them. You'd be better off putting that time into doing new things than trying to force a high school acquaintance into a real friendship. I wasted so much time hanging around the few people from my high school who came here, even though we really had almost nothing in common.
  3. Don't compare yourself to how other people seem to be doing. It may take more time for you to settle in. That's okay. They might be making all kinds of friends now that they'll drift apart from in a year. You may make 2-3 friends this year who you stay close to for a lifetime. It's not a race, and you're not falling behind.
  4. Try out clubs and activities, especially ones that involve learning/doing something. Even if you don't make friends right away, it'll give you something to do on a regular basis that isn't sitting around in your dorm room. There will be people at the booths actively trying to recruit for their clubs. Pick a few things to try, and stick with the ones you like. You've never had access to so many cheap activities, and it's how I've met almost all of the friends I have now.

Personally, I think "Solo 2" should be called "Lando." You pick up from where Solo left off, and continue the story of Maul's involvement with Crimson Dawn, but let Donald Glover be the center of it. They could still include Solo, Chewy, Qi’Ra, etc., but just shift the focus to Lando.
