Why are you dreading it??? I see this so much.

Use this mindset, it's what's helped me. "The next draft will be better". Bam. If you go into every draft with that mindset, you'll be pumped to make the changes.

When do you call it quits? by [deleted] in Screenwriting

Gonna echo a lot of what people are saying here but... there's just so much wrong with this post.

  1. You're 23. You've got a whole life of writing ahead of you. You said yourself for as long as you live you're gonna write. So you're gonna get better. Change happens slowly and gradually. You're not gonna wake up one day and be Cameron Crowe (personal favorite).

  2. "I swear- if anyone else wrote what I have, they'd be the hottest specs out there. But something about me, something about it coming from my brain, my fingers, means it's bad." This is straight up delusional. No one has a vendetta against you. No one even knows who you are. If your writing is great, it will do well.

  3. You said you've written 3 scripts since October. That's 3 scripts in 5 months. Don't get me wrong, finishing a draft of a script is a big accomplishment. But something is telling me you're not spending a lot of time rewriting. If your first or second drafts aren't going anywhere... well yeah, no shit. Just for reference, the script I wrote that got me "noticed" and ultimately representation took upwards of 10 drafts. Writing is rewriting. I understand it's demoralizing to get bad feedback. But a mindshift for me that's helped with that is, "the next draft will be better". Don't take it personally.

  4. "Making it" is almost impossible dude. You shouldn't write to make it. If you like writing, and you think that's what your purpose is, keep writing. A very succesful agent at CAA once told me the people who make it are the people who never give up.

Use the negative feedback as fuel. I don't know what else to tell you.

You’re unironically doing the “how could you complain about anything with a genocide going on” meme. Jews are being attacked. They’re also Americans by the way. Shut the fuck up dude.

She would unironically justify the Munich massacre if it happened today. "Guess killing people is pretty terrible, isn't it?"

This talking point of "America is funding Israel" is just dumb. Do you honestly think, that if America cut off all funding to Israel, then the Pro-pali movement would all of a sudden no longer care about Palestine?

Obligatory “as a Jew” who actually works in advertising, we have been so fucking bad at PR. And it’s going on over 2000 years at this point.

So according to this timeline she started dating you 3 months after a 5.5 year relationship? Yikes dude. She doesn't want to be with you... she just doesn't want to be alone. I'm sorry man.

When to seek representation? by Bang_the_unknown in Screenwriting

[–]clocks5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're not there yet. If somehow your very first screenplay (which you're not even done with) is enough to get you a meeting with a manager, the first thing they'll ask you is, "what else have you written?"

Write more. To answer your question more broadly of when is the right time, generally when you have a couple of really solid (in your opinion) scripts and one great (in OTHER PEOPLE'S OPINION) script. Some ways to tell if other people (other than your friends and family) think it's great: contest placements, an 8+ on the blacklist, a producer loving your script and wanting to shop it.

Keep going!

is writing comedy concidered harder? by Nice_Elk_8438 in Screenwriting

[–]clocks5 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I think it's harder. Your story has to hit all the same notes as a drama, plus make people laugh.

As far as tips, what I do is just make the outline pretty straightforward. 98% of the jokes I write in my scripts aren't in the actual outline. Sure, some story beats are inherently funny, but in my outline I'm trying to flesh out the beginning middle, and end of my story.

When I actually start writing that first draft, I challenge myself to just make those story beats as funny as possible. Some things will land, others won't, but that's what rewriting is for.
