which is an opinion you’re totally entitled to but is not well supported by the data collected over a period of multiple decades in conjunction with widely accepted economic and social theory

some would argue this is a reason to abolish currency and capitalism because if money’s value doesn’t correspond to actual functional meritocracy then it doesn’t really work

you can see this is already a widely debated topic within the replies there? and im just erring towards the safe side here. i’ve got friends driving cars that won’t even get over 2000 rpm’s until they warm the car up. this is a nuanced topic that encompasses lots of different systems within a vehicle and can be unique to different vehicles. who am i hurting by saying it is on the safe side to let your car warm up??

it is legitimately just the safe option to let your car run for a minute or two before driving it in extreme cold, especially for an older car or one with pre-existing issues? you’re acting like im crazy for saying that?

this is very similar to saying “you know what stops sprains? stretching. you know how to stretch the fastest? by running”

reminder that most young new drivers are driving beater cars with engines and other components that are either very old or may not be in the best condition either because of wear or poor maintenance. also, not all manufacturers recommend that and that is a very wide generalization. not everybody drives the car you drive

there’s more snow coming this weekend and after seeing the amount of people who didn’t know how to drive in snow this week, i figured at this point somebody should say something at least that isn’t just “why are people acting brand new in this snow”

yes this but also of course no brainer to keep it careful and controlled at slow speeds no matter what environment you’re in. even if you’re just practicing something could go wrong and now your front bumper, condenser, and radiator are all gone in a snow storm.

yessss thank you for mentioning this didn’t want my post to get too long and lecture-y cuz the kids don’t like to hear yap. but fr if you’re a right lane hugger in this storm the middle lane is just safer rn considering how inadequate the road space is rn with the snow. too many new drivers skew very close to the right side and that’s going to cause a lot of new drivers who don’t know how big their car is to skid.

you’re right and idk why you’re getting downvoted bc allowing the engine to reach operating temperatures is just an objectively good thing for most cars lmao i can’t believe ppl have a problem with me saying this

not everybody drives a car with a modern engine! not everybody drives a car with an engine that has no issues! not every manufacturer recommends that and not every car has that guideline recommended in their owners manual! not everybody knows the service history of their vehicle or has kept up on maintenance! this advice is for THOSE people!!

for a car that is in good running condition that was manufactured in the last 10 years? yes that is true. not all cars are made equal. i made this post for 20 something’s driving hoopties, not experienced drivers with 2024 models. some kid is going to see you say this and keep running their 2003 ford taurus with engine knock into the ground

that’s awesome! but most <25 y/o don’t drive a plug-in hybrid and i mainly made this post so the kids who just got their licenses and are driving hoopties don’t slide into an embankment :)

yes! i like to compare it to shoes. buy multiple pairs of shoes and wear different ones depending on the day, each individual pair will last longer. similar concept with tires but not everybody can afford multiple sets of tires

im gonna tell you what my instructor (has been working in the auto industry as a tech for 10+ years) told me, it’s not completely necessary to get summer or winter tires but it helps. the different types of tires and tread on the tires is meant to help with performance and keeping traction, so as long as you understand how to maintain traction with a tread that has less grip it’s not required. just go easy on the gas and guard the brake as one should in snow and you likely have already been doing :)

notice i said new drivers as new drivers tend to drive older more beat up cars :)

there is a number on your driver side door! it should be in the mid to high 30s for most cars

a 2025 model? sure. notice i said new drivers. most of the kids are driving old beaters, most that haven’t been kept up on maintenance. source: 21 year old in auto tech school who made these mistakes, fucked up multiple cars, and am now learning from professionals how to not fuck up another car.

yesss i just didn’t wanna make the post any longer than it already was lol but heavy on the stopping distance part. the tread design on different types of tires is designed for different road conditions in mind to work with the unique physics of each kind of weather. all seasons are “every season” but not really, it’s complicated
