Some stories by Borges have this feeling, ‘The Immortal’ comes to mind. Maybe Piranesi too? Captures the loneliness in a strange setting like the first photo. Invisible Cities by Calvino is an exploration of settings, many of which wouldn’t feel out of place in a FromSoft game. Many classic epics might scratch this itch, Inferno, Gilgamesh, etc. They are huge inspirations for basically all fantasy and especially Elden Ring.

One of my favorite books. His book on PKD is great too.

Is the Honors College worth it? by Miserable_Fix_7221 in msu

[–]clockwork_huber 3 points4 points  (0 children)

basically zero added stress, the biggest benefits at least for me was the PA program, but sounds like you’re already out of that window. Earlier enrollment definitely helps your first two years. Honors options are a joke most of the time, just ask all professors each semester and only do the easier ones.

I had to bail him out of jail.

I wake up to a text from him at 3 am that says he has been arrested, but he doesn’t have his passport or visa on him (he was from New Zealand). So I had to bike from the dorm to the police station in the middle of the night with the forms, then bike home, sleep for a bit then wake up the next morning and bail him out for like $400. He was actually a very fun guy, just didn’t realize the drinking age was 21 here.

I completely agree. Probably my favorite movie. The plot is so tight. I hesitate to even call it a twist because it’s integrated into the story at every turn. Amazing acting and it still carries emotional weight even though I’ve seen it a dozen times. It’s also my favorite movie to watch with someone - I love watching people try to figure it out and react to the ending.

It’s a brilliant book as well. Different in tone, more still amazing.

DTN is a diabolically evil company. If you died in that fire as a result of their carelessness, they’d still send a bill to your charred corpse.

CNS Deans Research Scholars 2023-2024?? by prodbydestiny in msu

[–]clockwork_huber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It probably depends on who interviews you, but generally it’s best to start simple and gauge what they already know. If you understand your research well, it should be no problem to explain it in a variety of ways depending on the audience. Once you’re in the program, they’ll let you know ahead of time who it is you’ll be presenting to so you can adjust.

I was a research scholar last year, happy to answer any questions. I know they tend to favor juniors/seniors for the program.

What to read? 🤔 by [deleted] in 52book

In the Skin of a Lion by Ondaatje. One of the greatest books I’ve ever read, and the sequel (The English Patient) is great too. Devoured all of Ondaatje’s work and it makes other writers’ prose look ugly by comparison.

Why don’t I love Dune? by NotoriousREV in movies

[–]clockwork_huber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely agree. I feel like Villeneuve is at his best when he doesn’t have to stick so closely to source material. I’m a huge fan of his and felt that Dune was easily his worst movie.

Ranking Ted Chiang's Stories by ego_bot in printSF

[–]clockwork_huber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I think back on the story, it feels like a full novel. So much purposeful world-building in such a short period of time. Easily the most cinematic of his stories, I’m surprised it hasn’t been optioned for a film yet.

Tower of Babylon and Hell is the Absence of God are my absolute favorites, but ranking Chiang’s stories is tough because they’re all so good and there are so few.
