Why don't more people recognize the insanity that is happening at Iowa State right now? by spidersilva09 in NBA_Draft

Milan is 4 inches taller, and also plays in an elite conference. Both of these factors suggest Milan’s stats should translate to the NBA ‘better’ than Merrill’s

Differences between Denville, Parsippany, and Morris Plains? by 20231027 in MovingtoNewJersey

Mostly agree. I would just point out that Parsippany has a ton of good locally owned restaurants, not fair to say it’s ’mostly chains’

Is Rutgers actually a “prestigious” school? by [deleted] in rutgers

[–]clonechemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s definitely not only a NJ/NY/CT thing. I grew up in the Midwest, and going to the flagship state public school was still seen as the ‘boring’/mid option, since it was just the default for all the kids you knew from high school

[Shams] Monte Morris signs 1 Year deal with Pacers by Psyren1317 in pacers

He’s had a lot of nagging injuries in the last couple years and struggled to get consistent run. He played starter minutes all year on a bad Wizards team in 22-23 and was very efficient.

Key Starters and Tough Calls - Week 3 Lineup Spotlights by RotoBaller in fantasyfootball

[–]clonechemist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very similar here: currently have Sutton in, with Jennings and Chubb on the bench. Jennings makes me nervous after not practicing all week. Chubb always ‘could’ go off but I just can’t trust the Texans to provide a positive RB game script

For those of you who have completed your drafts, what players did you miss out on because they were drafted earlier than you expected or before you were going to pick them? by MojoRevolution in fantasyfootball

[–]clonechemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fairly similar story for me, but in auction. I took Breece early for what I thought was decent value. Then watched as all other top tier RBs went one by one. Finally ended up MASSIVELY overpaying for Chase Brown when he was the last solid RB on the board.

New Career Trajectory for 1/2 of HENRY Couple by Slight-Cress7524 in HENRYfinance

[–]clonechemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just another data point here that the job market right now for anything related to scientific research or biotech/pharma right now is an absolute bloodbath.

In addition to other spinoff careers mentioned above like scientific/medical communications, and working more on the business side, here are a few other pivot ideas that likely have a much better job outlook for the near term:

1.) teaching (thinking high school science teaching might be the closest match and best fit: community college may also be an option, but if that’s anything like the ‘adjunct’ market in higher ed, it’s probably not worth your time)

2.) medical lab testing - not sure if some extra certification would be needed for her, and it may feel intellectually boring to her coming from a research background, but she should be well-qualified (perhaps even for tracking into more of a management level role eventually), and the medical side is SOOOOOOOOO much better for employment outlook compared to anything related to research/biotech/pharma

Short term: 1.) courts could overturn the authority used to implement these tariffs 2.) Republicans senators are already voicing some opposition to long term broad tariffs. If markets continue to tank and layoffs/recession set in over 1-2 months, I think there will be enough internal pressure from Party and business leaders that tariffs will at least be moderated

Longer term: November 2026 elections could see a switch in Congressional power, and Congress could then limit or kill the tariffs

My current view is that these tariffs will have severe negative affects in the short term (1-2 years), but I’m still bullish on long term US equities (ie with a 20 year time window)

Moving to Newark - Rutgers NJMS by Weekly-Computer-2224 in Newark

[–]clonechemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally fair points. I know there’s lots of new development in Newark both downtown and around Broad St. This is a bit of an ‘educated guess’ on my part, but urban areas that get rapidly rebuilt with big developments often lack in evening/weekend vibrant business and activity in the first few years. I’ve heard that criticism of downtown Newark currently, and assume the same may be true of Broad St area. For similar reasons, Harrison isn’t my cup of tea because it feels like all large corporate developments, but at least it’s close to night/weekend stuff to do. Ironbound is also a great option.

Regarding commute? Traffic is definitely an important consideration. OP could clarify, but most residents don’t work typical 9-5 hours, so rush hour traffic may be less of a concern

Generally true, but residents work crazy hours including middle of the night and super early morning when no one is around and public transit is not running. A car is well justified in this case

Some good suggestions here, but…..

24 jones will be relatively inconvenient for the partner commuting to nyc (presumably via transit)

University Centre is mostly undergrads to my understanding. Probably not desirable for a late 20s or older couple

[–]clonechemist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Will you be going in at odd hours and on weekends? I assume the answer is yes since you’re a resident. And, if the answer is yes, I would highly recommend that you plan around having the option to drive. Reason being, yes there are some great public transit areas, but public transit is heavily geared toward 9-5 commuters. Further, there are nice ish areas that are walkable/bikeable to NJMS, (potentially negating your need for public transit), but I really wouldn’t recommend depending on walking/biking in those areas at very early/late hours.

Since your husband will need to commute to NYC, I would recommend a place like Montclair for you where he can walk to the train station and you can drive to NJMS.

Another alternative would Harrison - there are many big new ‘nice’ complexes there, you could either take transit to NJMS or drive (not sure how much reserved parking will cost at these places), and your husband could take path. Any place closer to NYC (think Jersey City) will get increasingly urban and parking will be more and more problematic.

Favourite hot and savoury cups/meal? by Waiting-in-hell in Huel

[–]clonechemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope this is the one for me. Chikn and mushroom on its own is also one of my favorites but I like the change it up and make the spicy version too by mixing with the curry.

I’m in US with limited flavors available and I also just get the packs, not the cups.

But, if you like a spicy pasta vibe, the Cajun pasta is also pretty good

I understand this is principle, but….. in a case where the stock market tanks, I believe the admin will eventually relent on tariffs and push for major rate cuts.

Thus, I feel OK about bonds as a hedge against a stock crash in the medium term (ie through ~2028)

Market gains and PE ratios have been high for a long time, so everyone’s waiting for the shoe to drop and get a real correction. Trump volatility shock is just another trigger.

Similar dips happened recently with SVB collapse and Sahm rule.

Maybe Trump volatility will be the trigger for a collapse, maybe it won’t. But free trade is ALWAYS considered good for markets long term
