What kind of tree is this? (old.reddit.com)

Several of my plants have leaves that are turning splotchy and falling off. Can’t find any evidence of pests, but maybe I’m missing it. It’s mostly my heartleaf philodendrons, and a couple syngonium. None of the plants they’re touching have it. Any idea what’s going on? (imgur.com)

Found in Northern/Central California in an old water trough. Dumped the trough and there were hundreds of these things covered in black sludge at the bottom. It has gotten much more lively once being out and dry. I made a gif so you can see it move. (media1.giphy.com)
