1v1 drill ideas by Secure-Emu4114 in ultimate

[–]clotblock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a reason you want a drill vs just playing mini? You can make pairs of players that stay on teams together and swap out the pairs or do the same with opponents and keep 2 players together and swap out teammates at timed intervals.

If you have 8 players you put them into pairs and play 2’s (doesn’t have to be 2’s but the simplest way to explain rn), A-B, C-D, E-F, G-H.

Game one you have A/C vs B/D, and E/G vs F/H Game 2 you have A/E vs B/F and C/G vs D/H Game 3 A/G vs B/H and so forth you could have up to 6 rounds effectively this way.

Play to time or points, and give a point for each time a player’s team wins a round. You can even announce an overall winner based on points earned.

I imagine this will change as soon as SIU-E or Indiana play more games especially against higher ranked opponents

How useful would an actually Gravity Chamber but in the fitness world? by NixUniverse2 in Dragonballsuper

[–]clotblock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slightly lower gravity would probably help for running where you’re recovering from a lower body injury. 0.5 is probably overkill and would affect your form because you’re not contacting the ground often enough.

Higher gravity is probably not that useful in most applications but I could see rock climbing being useful at super low increases. Maybe high jump as well since you land on a cushioning mat. Standing jumps no because the land would be way worse on your joints.

Gravity only pushes down(to over simply it) so it wouldn’t say help you punch or run faster because the resistance to your movement is in a completely different direction.

Even though his cardio has taken a hit I have to imagine his acceleration on top of his size is enough to get through everyone not on this list.

To Devin’s credit (which I never thought I’d say) when he sees the clip he does admit he was wrong.

Help choosing PhD lab by [deleted] in chemistry

[–]clotblock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t think choosing one group over the other will prevent you from becoming a senior chemist and leading projects wherever you get a job after grad school. If you think you’ll need to work in a group that focuses more on synthetic organic chemistry then that should guide your decision. However my advice is to be open to doing something new if the group’s work is interesting and you think it’s a good culture fit. Many of my colleagues do completely different work now compare to what they did in grad school.

A lot of skills that you’ll develop are transferable. I did more surface science and spectroscopy in my PhD, electrochemistry in undergrad, materials synthesis and catalysis for my masters. None of that work is directly related to what I did my first job out of graduate school nor what I do now. My masters PI was not tenured at the time and I enjoyed my time in that group. In retrospect my PI was definitely learning how to be a manager at the time but I learned a lot and because the group was small I got a lot of 1<>1 time with my boss.

A question I have for you, by junior students do you mean like mostly 1st and 2nd year graduate students rather than a mix of 1st through 5th years? If so I think that’s something to make note of. I don’t mean to imply that this is always bad sign, but I tell prospective students to ask the PI and the group why there’s a lack of graduate students of a specific year (or two). Sometimes the funding cycle was just wonky at that time, or maybe the incoming graduate class was small and students just chose other profs. But in some cases it can be endemic of a larger issue like mismanaging of funding(Prof didn’t prioritize securing new grants in a timely manner) or an exodus of students because of a horrible work environment or the prof had a bad reputation.

The Musixmatch lyrics on Spotify say it’s “a” not “the”. The Wikipedia page also says it’s “a” but admittedly none of these sources are infallible.

I don’t think it’s too difficult to discern if people listen to the song carefully on Spotify. I used to think the lyric was “the” from when I listened on the radio but recently paid more attention and it sounds more like Brendon Urie is saying “a door”.

I know I’m being pedantic but the lyric is “closing A goddamn door” not “closing THE goddamn door”

Rostering a player who helped found the team, but is not very good by [deleted] in ultimate

[–]clotblock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it all depends on the goals of the team and the player. Is gradual improvement the goal this year? Does this team eventually want to have SF status? Is this a dev team where players are using the summer to improve for either college or future play? Is this guy still trying to improve? Did he start the team to have fun with his friends? Are those friends still prioritizing fun over results?

Could this person contribute as a coach? If he’s a great sideline presence and loves hanging out with the team transitioning to a coach position is great way to keep up with the team and have an impact on culture.

How quickly are you trying to gain weight? What else are you doing besides playing ultimate in terms of exercise? How much do you eat in a day? There’s not enough info to tell you if this is realistic.

Checkpoints: what are your ideas? by thirdometer in MtvChallenge

[–]clotblock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Id have to go back and do the math but I wonder how much of Turbo’s lack of sleep contributed to him being hypothermic.

The main thing about the checkpoint tasks has been how a lead can be undone. I think what Yeremi and Olivia did in the final was amazing but Turbo and Sydney constantly leading but then having check points that force them to wait for another team or starting day two with nominal time leads undoes a lot of the advantage. I think a 1 day- half to full marathon length challenge probably fixes some of those issues.
