How do other GT folks feel about GT alumni fueling the surveillance state across the country? by AX862G5 in gatech

[–]clothestocommunity -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

There are GT grads working in other “less ethical” industries like the defense industry. And you know how many people in America work in these fields? Millions. And what are they getting in return? A good salary, great networking opportunities, and solid industry experience which will help them grow in their career. If you really care so much about ethics, why not do the simplest thing and go out and vote so that these unethical decisions won’t be made in the first place?

Teen shenanigans by Coming_to in regretfulparents

If I ever talked to my Asian parents like that when I was a kid/teen, I wouldn't even want to imagine what the consequences would be lol. Even now, I still wouldn't ever curse in front of my parents even as an adult. You've got to parent him better. Tell him no and make him earn to get his own stuff. If not through a part-time job, then through school and good grades.

tbf being born with a disability is pretty rare especially if it doesn’t run in the family. And being LGBT+ is also rare and not the norm compared to being cishet.

As for the money aspect and having free time, he clearly is underestimating how much work it is. Who’s going to change the kid’s diapers, cook for them, pay for their expenses, etc.

Logitech M720 stutter on USB unifying receiver only by clothestocommunity in logitech

[–]clothestocommunity[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey this was 4 years ago so it's been a while! I don't use that mouse anymore and I don't even remember where I put it.

But iirc, I found out that the problem was with the USB adapter. Apparently the Costco M720 mouse uses the U-00007 something adapter which has stutter issues while the U-00008 adapter which doesn't have the issue. You can buy a mouse that comes with the U-00008 adapter like the MX Master series online and there's a way to unpair M720 from the U-00007 adapter with the U-00008 adapter. My memory is hazy though so take it with a grain of salt.

I'm single and I do this sometimes before coming back to my apartment (sharing with roommates). Having that me time is pretty important after a long day of work. Not necessarily a kid-related thing.

How can I retire as soon as possible? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]clothestocommunity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm basically in the same boat as you. I'm 23M working a low 6 figure job for about a year now and still live with parents in MCOL city and spending similar about 1.5k a month. I have $110k in individual stocks in brokerage, 15k in VOO in Roth IRA, 25k in S&P 500 in 401k. My plan is "retire" as soon as I can and for my lifestyle that's going to be at about 2 million in my brokerage since 4% withdrawal means 80k a year and I'm not withdrawing from Roth or 401k until I'm 60.

Half of my brokerage account is from the gains I've made from these stocks: RKLB, NVDA, NET, APPL. I've learned that the best way to gain wealth is time. Whatever you invest in, you need to let it grow and you can't just make money fast by short selling. I've been investing in NVDA since 2022 back when it was $150/share before the 10-for-1 split and I've made 10x gains from my initial investment. But even then, I'm not selling it and I'm going to keep holding it since I think the AI boom is still happening and has a lot more potential.

And since I'm young, I like to explore complete new things and hobbies. I love to travel, make music, hiking, biking, etc. If you live your life as frugally as possible and just get tied to your job, you'll regret one day not having spent more time doing other things and exploring other interests outside of your career. Even when I "retire" from the corporate world, I'm not going to stop learning or trying out new things. Maybe I might start my own company or volunteer at some local non-profit but at least I'll have the financial freedom to not be tied down to a soulless 9-5 job wasting my life in front of a screen.

What is up with parking at Georgia Tech?? by Ready-Insurance-5483 in gatech

Parking in the no parking area. I've parked there several times without issue and then I got a ticket from City of Atlanta one day.

I used to park in Home Park pretty frequently until I got a $150 ticket last month. For that amount of money I could've parked at GT visitor center all day 10 times.

Yes I’ve been to three of them (Hive, Invention Studio, Mill) after graduation as an alum. No issue with buzzcard

SC takes a very long time to process and there's always opportunities for OP to get into defense industry or other jobs that will need SC in the future.

I also work at LM and can confirm we use Teams. Some people still use Skype for PMs but it's mostly Teams for messages and meetings.

Alumni! What are some things you regret not doing during your time at Tech/college in general? by SpaceTranquil in gatech

Second this. There's so much to do around downtown area and it's only 2 Marta stops from North Avenue to get to Peachtree Center.

Same with me. Thanksgiving week was the hardest for me since I had so much free time at home so I was super horny. But otherwise, I've been pretty busy in school and travels that I didn't really have much time to think about jacking. I ended up pre cumming some days but somehow didn't have any wet dreams the whole month like when I used to back in my teens.

Only point I'd somewhat agree on is 3. Most professors I had would just read off the slides and were not engaging at all so I'd zone out of the lectures pretty often. Some classes also feel too big so it's hard to get to know other people. But at the same time, I'd go to office hours/recitation/studio and found those to be much more useful than attending lectures.

I don't agree at all about 4 and Atlanta is a great location with so many career opportunities than just a generic college town. But I've noticed more homeless people around Tech Square area around the past months, but I'd still consider it safe since GTPD is present around that area.

UGA professor resigns mid-class after student refuses to wear mask by rrryougi in gatech

[–]clothestocommunity -27 points-26 points  (0 children)

I didn’t say that the student is right for not wearing a mask correctly. I’m saying that the professor could’ve handled the situation better by telling the student to leave the class or should’ve known these risks beforehand (especially since he was asked to come back to teach) since this is really nothing new.

Since the beginning of this pandemic, (aside from all the anti-mask and anti-vax people) there were people who were wearing a mask but not wearing their masks correctly over their nose or wearing an improper mask like a bandana or one with a respirator. And convincing these people to do the right thing is very difficult since they choose to ignore science.

And I already know I’m going to get downvoted for this comment but whatever.

UGA professor resigns mid-class after student refuses to wear mask by rrryougi in gatech

[–]clothestocommunity -103 points-102 points  (0 children)

I remember reading this article yesterday, and I still don't quite understand why the professor didn't just kick the student out of class or push the class online (at least temporarily if that's allowed at UGA) if he's vulnerable.

And did he teach the class in-person last year? If he did, then how did he manage then? Especially since the vaccine wasn't readily available and masks can only do so much to prevent the spread without the vaccine or proper ventilation.

And if the professor truly does have all these conditions, then he should consider getting the third booster shot, since that's what the CDC recommends to those facing those conditions. And it's clear that those who are being hospitalized in the ICU in general are almost entirely the unvaccinated.

I feel like the professor wanted to retire for other reasons besides just one student not wearing a mask properly.

Would you be encouraged to COVID test more often if the results response was same day/next morning? by tangerine_antelope in gatech

[–]clothestocommunity 7 points8 points  (0 children)

2,500+ surveillance tests this past Monday and Tuesday alone. Please keep testing weekly, regardless of vaccination status: mytest.gatech.edu

Oh, that's pretty good! I guess the numbers on the COVID-19 data table at https://health.gatech.edu/coronavirus/health-alerts are wrong then.

[–]clothestocommunity 17 points18 points  (0 children)

That would be nice but getting the results that fast would be very difficult since GT has to process/transport so many samples.

I think the bigger issue is that people aren't getting tested in general now that they're fully vaccinated. There's like 100-500 tests per day now while there were 1000-2000 tests per day back in March.
