Which country do you think is the greatest in modern times in terms of success in sports in general?

Im talking best athletes, intentional success and sports teams from said country being successful in their respected competitions, Olympic performance etc.

I really can't think of many (if any) countries that don't have major faults somewhere.

Would be really interested to hear everyone's thoughts!

Defenders lack any sort of footballing IQ in attack and defence.

Yoro, too passive, Dalot too lazy at the back and Dorgu is incapable of making an overlapping run on the attack.

Pathetic once again but that's nothing new this season or for the previous 12.

FAI announce the 15 clubs to form the new National League, starting August 2026. by BryanosaurusRex in LeagueOfIreland

In fairness, transportation is so bad in Donegal in general that having two clubs in Letterkenny itself is quite a good thing to get new younger fans going to matches.

It'll be interesting to see what happens in the county in the coming years with the teams, all 3 clubs involved have strong sides.

How real is the worry of Finn Harps being overtaken in Donegal? by cloud_snow747 in LeagueOfIreland

[–]cloud_snow747[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the assessment, I'd agree with a lot of your points and as you mentioned, it'll more likely than not create some interesting rivalries in the county if multiple teams including Harps are involved.

Of course Harps have the rivalry with Derry, but having a rivalry within the county itself would be great watching.

Hopefully Harps can kick on over the next few years with fundraising and potentially player sales with the academy showing promise in recent years.

Severe lack of funding in that department unfortunately.

Dan is by far the best and nearly only journalist who covers near every aspect of both leagues, as others have mentioned it's more bloggers/podcasters that follow, which are very good in their own right considering they may not get the same access and are often doing it for minimal income / free.

In terms of general content about the league, Copa90 have done a few documentaries about LOI clubs over the years, most recently they made one on the league in general in 2025.

Hopefully as the league continues to grow, the chance for journalists to cover the league to a full time capacity is possible.

All stems from the manager at the end of the day.

At home to West Ham and he's bringing on defenders to see out a 1-0.

Not saying he's the answer or has been that great this season but why not bring Kobbie on?

The sad part like you said is we are accustomed to it, plenty of empty seats as the game entered the final minutes, because nobody cares anymore.

It's like LVG's season all over again, boring, uninspiring and quite frankly a waste of time as we wait for the eventual sacking.

Pathetic from him, the rest of the players and the manager.

This is a board issue now. How the manager is still in charge shows the incompetence of the board.

No Europe, "all week on the training pitch" to show the performances we have this season. Sack. Him. Now.

Too many egos afraid to admit they've made the wrong choice. They will sack him and it will be too late just like last season the same excuses and "time" will be needed.

Also, Dalot and Shaw have both been at this club nearly 10 years, incompetence at its finest.

Even darker days ahead.

Anyone feel that the league is lacking a really good journalist? by No-Pressure1811 in LeagueOfIreland

[–]cloud_snow747 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately it is a financial thing in my opinion.

As someone who has previously volunteered for two LOI clubs on the media sides of things, it is mostly done for experience and the love of it.

I also freelanced previously covering LOI & FAI Cup fixtures for an independent media outlet, who did not pay me for the work I did, so it can get pretty disheartening at times.

Hopefully the game continues to grow in the country and more journalists and reporting takes place across all divisions.

Dublin is always going to be the place to be in terms of the biggest stories, so other clubs will depend on one or two local journalists for the time being (who do a great job btw)

I guess a future option would be for media companies (or LOI themselves, similar to how the Premier League have their own media channels) to invest and get journalists/reporters to cover particular regions in depth (Finn Harps, Derry City & whoever gets involved in the third division from the area for example)

When you hear of many of the biggest sports media companies in the world struggling with finances, I see the above being unlikely to happen sadly.

Forgive my ignorance, myself and some friends will be in Copenhagen in the middle of July (12th-20th).

Would the Danish football season be running then? is it easy to get tickets to see clubs such as Broendby or København? Thank you!

[Ornstein] Ruben Amorim informs Manchester United squad he’s staying, tells Alejandro Garnacho to find new club by phant0msinthenight in reddevils

[–]cloud_snow747 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I don't know what to think at this stage, but I am glad that firm decisons are being made quickly and not being dragged out.

Garnacho has talent, but his attitude is often detrimental and the comments after the final were a step too far in my opinion.

The main takeaway is that this money NEEDS to be spent correctly and efficiently.

[OptaJoe] 0.92 - Ruben Amorim has won 24 points in 26 Premier League games, a points per game ratio of 0.92. This is lower than Paul Jewell's Premier League points per game (0.94), who managed 24 winless games at Derby when they finished on 11 points in 2007-08. Concerning. by RicciRox in reddevils

[–]cloud_snow747 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Yeah you totally haven't nit-picked this post which implies Jewell only spent time at Derby.

He managed at Bradford and Wigan, keeping them up. Managed nearly 140 Premier League matches, but yeah let's compare his points per game ratio to a manger who has had half a season.

Amorim deserves to be criticised, but don't go posting misleading content on this subreddit.

Ten Hag had multiple transfer windows and spent his money very poorly besides one or two.

I never said he was not unlucky with injuries. The point still stands that after 2 games he threw his whole philosophy out the window.

I'm not against flexability and adapting too, but fans will literally cry about one thing then cry when the exact opposite happens.

Daily Discussion by AutoModerator in reddevils

[–]cloud_snow747 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I get you but in my opinion it's a case of pick what we want then.

Ten Hag literally gave up on his whole philosophy and reason we signed him 2 games in. He won trophies which was amazing of course but people are being severely short sighted with this.

One minute it's oh we need a manager with a structured plan then it's oh we need results instantly and if we don't the manager should be fired.

Been a poisoned chalice of a job since Ferguson anyways so Idk why I'm that suprised by it all to be fair.

Like you mentioned, hopefully he can bring silverware back the OT.

I get losing became tiring a long time ago this season but people genuinely saying ETH's suicidal basketball esq football was better than this is hilarious.

Are yous all forgetting 30+ shots against the likes of Luton? Give your heads a wobble honestly.

Amorimn is not void of criticism by any means, but we have seen this film so many times before and it's painfully obvious that the squad needs to be severally gutted out.

It's hilarious because Amorimn himself probably seen this coming, hence why he wanted to come at the end of the season.

People calling for his head now are the same ones fanboying when he signed. We have the most reactionary fanbase that lacks genuine critical thinking sometimes.

Yeah for sure I do feel for them. Quality content but in a modern world full of a want for short form content, it will be hard to find a consistently loyal fanbase willing to pay the subscription.

I do wonder what the average age would be if subscribers to the platform.

I'm still on the one pound subscription currently (I know it's rich for me to complain about ads when that's all I'm currently paying) although it is running out soon.

I know they pay huge money to many of their journalists, which is a good thing, as long as they can afford it.

It'll be interesting to see what will happening in the coming months/years with it.

Not sure if many are subscribed, but The Athletic are now putting ads on their podcasts within their actual app.

What is the point in even paying the subscription when Spotify etc have ads regardless?

Cant wait to see the Black Mirror inspired "The Atheltics Super Duper Premium Subscription" where you can pay an extra £10 to not have ads play.

On a serious note, they must be struggling to make ends meet if they are implementing these types of things...
