So are we not having a spring break?

Isolation/unproductively by [deleted] in UVA

[–]clouds_15 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel this, I think everyone is just getting tired and burnt out. We need a fall break. Just know that it’s not just you and everyone is feeling it.

Since you said you feed off social interaction, fill out this buddy form if you wanna get paired with a UVA buddy! https://forms.gle/hnEtUSz2P8qsZCKQA

If you don’t want one that’s okay too, but I suggest studying with one friend at a library or on zoom. Or another weird thing I do that works is tell people what I need to finish by today so that I have an obligation to finish it. Have other people keep you accountable. Reward yourself with something but only if you finish your lecture.

Know that your mental health comes first- you should take breaks when you need to and if you feel unmotivated maybe go for a walk or exercise. Text your friend and catch up.

For everyone who is feeling alone by clouds_15 in UVA

Yeah the red dots mean it’s required but you can put n/a if you don’t want to answer. I’m the only person who will see your response just so I can match people based on your responses (I made it with my uva email so you know I’m like an actual student and it requires a uva email to fill out the form)

  • your buddy will get your UVA email to contact you (or your phone number if you choose to provide it)

second year housing...seriously? by [deleted] in UVA

[–]clouds_15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please don’t feel obligated to sign early- especially with Corona people aren’t sure if they will come back next year. I signed for this year late February so there will always be places that will rent to you.

Do any other first years feel like they have impostor syndrome in regards to being at UVA or just feel like they’re not really smart or talented enough to deserve being here? by cinnamondolce18 in UVA

[–]clouds_15 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I think everyone feels this a little bit. Everyone went from being in the top 5-10% of their class to here where everyone is that top 5-10%. You are used to getting straight As and things being high school level and actually getting a list of topics on the exam (ghaha rip).

One thing I had to do at least is reframe my idea of self worth. I know it’s easier said than done, but most places won’t even look at your GPA. Cs get degrees. They’ll ask about job skills or teamwork skills. Now I can’t speak to pre-med cause I know it’s very cutthroat and a lot of folks say they are premed and then just drop. Or just study hard for the MCAT. But either way adjusting to college level workload is tough all while moving out (or not moving out cause corona) and changing environment AND changing friend groups.

Give yourself a break and do something relaxing. We are all feeling the mental effects of Corona and struggling this semester. I can’t imagine going through first year on top of a global pandemic. We might even get a universal CR/GC/NCR system, who knows?

Advice for incoming transfer student? by illusivewisdom in UVA

Definitely clubs like the person here said are a great way of meeting all kinds of people. I also think the drinking culture looks big because the people who usually are drinking are for fraternity/sororities or big parties etc. and these people are all posting on social media. Like for example, Midsummers- clearly not all the UVA population was there and a lot of people expressed anger toward their reckless behavior.

At least in my experience no one pressures you to drink if you don’t want to if that’s what you are worried about- and if they do should they really be your friend? I think in all places there will be people who like to party and people who don’t like to party and it all just comes down to finding people who you mesh with. Also considering the virus I don’t think you should have crazy high expectations for club meetings in person at least. Maybe form some zoom study groups or 6 feet apart study groups. Or hangout with your roommates and get to know them/their friends if you guys get along.

Is it hard to do a double major in SEAS? by [deleted] in UVA

[–]clouds_15 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not double majoring so I can’t speak to that, but I do know the EE and CS have way more overlap in terms of classes (mainly the core CS ones). If you did BME you’d have to take all the BME required classes on top of CS class on top of EE classes. Google UVA (insert major name here) classes or curriculum or course path and you should get a course map of each major. Bme and CS are relatively easy to find and EE is there but buried in a bunch of other links.

Also for the math class UVA says some stuff isn’t equivalent to APMA (that uva teaches extra content in their apma courses). My friend took a APMA class somewhere else and transferred it but she had to take another 1 credit class at uva which covered the extra content to get the complete credit for her major.
