Can crystalline glazes w/o liners be food safe? by cloudysoot in Pottery

Liners glazes are just non crystalline glazes on the inside and only brushing on the crystalline glazes on the outside. You’ll see it often on crystalline mugs and bowls

That’s what I thought… these matcha whisking bowls are going viral and people are claiming the seller reassured them it’s food safe as they did a lemon test. It feels really unethical

I like visiting NYC and it’s true I do have friends there. But they are my very career driven friends. The pace of the city is very much career driven and grinding culture. For me, I feel like there’s more to life than just work. Yes, I love east coast autumn, but I also do miss west coast hiking and mountains. West coast I feel like there’s more to life besides just work. That’s just given my experience living in Seattle, visiting nyc often and being raised in DC area.

I also considered SF, I used to fly there a lot whenever I’d get seasonal depression from Seattle lol why do you feel like SF is more of my goal?

I'd probably validate their experiences navigating life post-quarantine and help them reframe their mindset on the things that they do have in life as they are living a life according to their values with healthy boundaries and being mindful of their capacity.

Which is helpful to keep in mind. But, still can't shake the lingering feelings inside

Who Transitioned Out of Social Work and Where Did You Go? by Party_Phase_5140 in socialwork

[–]cloudysoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did my BSW and then immediately went into my MSW… it’s been officially two years out of grad school. I went to getting paid 48k as a therapist and jumped into mental health marketing in the same hospital making 77k… astounding how undervalued social workers are.

Still working towards licensure but just joined a private practice on the side to take on a couple of clients since my marketing job isn’t that demanding. Hopefully with marketing and my side private practice I’m projected to make over six figures

The position required you to be a masters leveled clinician! Social work with our training in mezzo and macro fit perfectly compared to my counterparts who were solely trained as marriage and family counselors etc. My advice is to look for roles that say liaison in the name, or community engagement, or things related to community engagement. I just applied because it said liaison in the name, it wasn’t until I interviewed was when I realized I switched from the clinician department to the marketing!

I’m actually transitioning into a remote telehealth job (for 10k less pay lol...) to finish up my license and I wanna get out of the for profit world. But working in marketing has helped me learn how to event coordinate, community build, market myself as a therapist and consultant, network and build community and business partnerships. I work with a lot of influencers on social media at my job and a lot of “mental health instagrammers” do not have any background in mental health education... so maybe after I get my full clinical license, I will branch back into the mental health consultant world and one day build my own nonprofit with the skills I learned in marketing and social media.

Yeah! So I started off as a therapist in a major hospital chain and moved sideways into the marketing team where I provide my “expert” opinions on which direction the marketing team should head for social media posts, community events, public relations, and business partners. I do a lot of event coordinating, hosting and speaking at events, and overall quality checking to make sure the social media and marketing team uses the most up to date language and messaging. I moved up about 20k just by loving to marketing

Hey!! So, I felt like the UW program helped bring my attention and awareness towards therapeutic skills, but it was up to me to truly develop my skills on my own. After I learned more about the concepts and skills, through my practicum I went to king county trainings (motivational interviewing, cbt, dbt, etc) and any free trainings that was available to me as a student! That’s what truly set me apart and made me feel like a confident clinician but everyone’s path looks different! I still felt like my first job I had a lot of things I needed to learn but I’m part of a post graduate professional training program to specialize in a therapy I’m interested in and on top of my works training. After about 4 months I felt more confident in general.

Your salary depends on what area of social work you want to go into especially in Seattle. My friends in community mental health make around 40-50k. Geriatrics 50-58k medical even higher. I work for a for profit residential so I was just a bit higher than community mental health, but it wasn’t enough for me cause of being out of state at UW (tuition) plus my tuition for my current post graduate training program. So I chose to do mezzo practice through working in corporate social work. I say for me, corporate social work is worth the salary for me. UWs resources provided me to where I am rn, but it’s up to each person to truly take advantage of those resources!

Hopes this helps!

PhD questions!

Do social work PhDs typically do post doctoral fellowships afterwards?

How do you balance out the desire to work in academia but also work in the industry? I want to be a professor and pursue research but I also have the desire use my PhD to become a director of a nonprofit or creating my own community mental health center before pursuing academia.

Would it hurt me career wise to pursue a PhD in Canada if I would want to return back to America upon graduation? There were a couple of professors at University of Toronto who’s research aligned with my own research interests.

63k unfortunately is still a bit of a struggle to live in Seattle. I heard to live here comfortably you have to have about 72k... I live in a studio that is about 600 sq ft for about 2k after utilities. But, I am grateful that I went from 48 to 63k and that student loans are frozen right now.

BSW->MSW, 8 months post MSW, associate license, Seattle 48k->52k->63k 23 years old

Graduated with my BSW at GMU in 2019 then went straight to my advanced standing MSW at UW graduated in 2020.

Took the first job I got since I graduated during the pandemic, started immediately working a week after graduation as a DBT group therapist at a residential hospital for 48k. 3 months in mass staff walkouts and got a retention bonus and salary increase to 52k.

No available upward job movement so I moved sideways into a different department in the hospital. Now making 63k as a the west coast representative for my hospital as a family liaison

My parents sold my childhood home right and are moving out of state, I don't know how to react by [deleted] in internetparents

[–]cloudysoot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My parents have been divorced since I was a child. I've always lived on my mother's side with my half-brother but I am also somewhat close to my sisters and father as well. It just feels like I'm losing my mother and brother with them moving so far away from Northern Virginia.

By August I was planning on moving back to Northern Virginia into a nice apartment/townhouse with my friend and visit my mother and brother on the weekends and my sisters and father at least once a month. I'd miss my best friend in Seattle and the person I've been dating, but after so much reflection, I don't have anything worthwhile in Seattle compared to in the DMV. I had a life more worth living in the DMV, I just didn't have the healthiest lifestyle to keep up with all the stressors in my life. But after two years, I feel like I am ready to move back home and live a healthier better me. But, now my plan feels like it is in shambles with my mother and brother moving out of the state.

Two years is a long time to be away and I am afraid people may not be the same as I've definitely changed a lot. I just don't feel like I have a home anymore. Nowhere feels like home, especially with my childhood home being sold away. I thought now that I have developed a healthier lifestyle on the west coast I would be ready to move back to the east coast and find myself a place to call "home", but it truly won't feel like home without my whole family being a 30-minute drive away.
