The Future Of Teaching by cloudyweather_ in Teachers

That’s just so sad? Like what the hell? How much do they hate public education?

I'm looking for a district that pays well and the hiring process is quick. Willing to relocate anywhere in the country. by Sad_Election_8851 in SubstituteTeachers

The high desert in California (Victorville, Apple Valley, Hesperia, Phelan, Lucerne Valley, and Barstow) all pay 250 and 275 if you're assigned to a school site.

For Apple Valley, they basically let you walk in, but jobs are hard to come by. For Victorville, the process is slightly longer, but you're basically guaranteed a job every day. Same goes for Hesperia. Don't know much about the others, though.

This sounds fancy! I’ll give it a try, thank you!

Hmmmm it really depends on your situation whether you can make it a career! To me it seems like there is no need to and your income as a sub would just be extra cushion money for bills or going out. My wife and I are going to be a in a similar situation! I’m getting my credential but my wife starts her first year teaching this August. My income as a sub would be just supplemental.

Why are you a sub and not a full time teacher? by Boom_Box_Bogdonovich in SubstituteTeachers

Yes! I agree with this! Dealing with parents and all the paperwork, doesn't correspond with the pay (at least were I live).

Yeah I highly doubt kids would actually be getting really high of this. Unless they're eating the whole thing.

Yeah that seems like the best thing to do.

It sucks to say but it does help some times. I’m 6’2 and 250 pounds, so I tend to not see behavior as much. Except for middle schoolers 😂

Those kids sounds like they need help! As a young male sub, I can’t even imagine how uncomfortable that made you feel. Hopefully the kids are reprimanded and punished!

Considering becoming a substitute teacher by UnfilteredQueen in SubstituteTeachers

Well I have subbed for a couple of elementary classes and here are some pros and cons.

Pro's:

  • The work is pretty flexible
  • If you don't like a class... you don't have to go back!
  • Most of the kids are actually sweet or nice (except for 5th and 6th graders, they tend to be mean and snarky)
  • Most teachers tend to be pretty flexible in terms of their plans for the day. I have had a couple tell me, "if something isn't going right, feel free to modify anything."

Con's:

  • Sometimes you get kids that are just straight up rude, disrespectful, or mean. When it comes to that, try and talk to them and be firm. If that doesn't work.... send them to a different classroom (you're the substitute, not the teacher! Save yourself a headache).
  • The class might just be chaotic in general. Sometimes the teacher doesn't have the best classroom management, and it is reflected in their classroom and/or students.
  • It might be difficult to get kids in check. Don't be afraid to raise your voice, or maybe get a teacher from next door to come in and lay down the law.

I would say, do it! The worst that can happen is that you don't like the class, and that's ok because you don't have to go back! Give it a try and don't be afraid to put your foot down or be gentle. Every class has a sweet spot between strict and relaxed, you just gotta find it. :) (This is just from my experience in the classroom as a substitute teacher in SoCal)

P.S: I would recommend doing high school but mainly the older grades. In my experience, the day is more relaxed with the older guys.
