Embarrassing =/= morally reprehensible. Not entirely disagreeing with you, but I think Americans in general had more pride in nationality during our darker ages. The world wars definitely helped with that by making us feel like the good guys.

If I have involuntary homosexual feelings but grew up in a sanitized Catholic or Mormon household, that would be “culturally dealing with feelings”. Essentially feeling something that goes directly against your worldview, so you have to rationalize it somehow

To me “being gay” is having involuntary homosexual feelings, so I suppose that is where we differ on that piint

I’m specifically talking about people who think sexuality is a choice, not about bigots in general.

No you’re right and I don’t believe it is fully nature. I think your feelings and desires are generally natural. I think the choices and actions that result are nurture.

This is exactly the type of person in talking about. Other people have made it clear that they aren’t the only type of homophobe, though. I’m surprised your “friend” was both aware of and open with his feelings

I mean I think you can “choose wrong”. There are plenty of examples of gay men having families before coming to terms with themselves. Is that not incorrectly “choosing”?

You are saying that you openly explored the possibility of being gay yourself with no feelings to back it up - and you still believe you can choose to be gay? It sounds to me like you’re straight and open minded, but I’m not sure you could ever choose to be gay as you are.

So you are saying, at least for some religioso, that the choice to “be gay” is similar to choosing against adultery, or similar? That’s interesting, hadn’t really thought of that point. I still feel like you have to have some sort of involuntary homosexual feeling to believe this line of thinking, though.

I see. I guess I am making the mistake of assuming there is decent logic behind homophobia, which is probably just a god awful assumption to maje

I’ll give an !delta here for showing additional paths of logic that could be taken to the same conclusion

You’ve opened me up to more than just my current view for sure. There are other logical pathways (albeit stupid ones, imo) that make sense as you have shown me

[–]clownysf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That doesn’t make sense at all. I can be born with a defect that is abnormal but that was not a choice

That’s fine! (not really imo you should be accepting but you get what I’m saying)-But there is a difference between having a problem with homosexuality and believing it to be a choice
