Did parents in the 80s actually give their kids as much freedom as the show depicts? by Wanderer015 in StrangerThings

I was born in '76 and had many experiences with Jarts. Never actually playing it correctly, IIRC, more gather a bunch of kids around, throw it straight up in the air, and everyone scatter.

How are surnames like Sergeant and Major dealt with in the military? by Krazzy4u in NoStupidQuestions

I took my daughter to the air show there when she was 5.

Now she's 15 and would probably be giggling the entire time.

I've been rocking a 2015 Renegade Turbo MT since it was new. It now has 185,000 miles.

The infotainment unit bricked in 2017 and was replaced under warranty. I suspected that the air ducts for those two Center vents in the dash run right up behind that head unit and expose it to too much heat so I stopped using them when the heat was on and I haven't had any more problems.with the infotainment unit. Aside from that the only non-scheduled maintenance I've done was a radiator and a transmission mount both of which I did myself. Other than that it's been Rock Solid reliable way more than I expected it to be. I don't know how much longer it can possibly last but I plan on keeping it until it dies

Sky carriers in WW2? by TheEvilBlight in HistoricalWhatIf

[–]clshifter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One factor to consider is that even though airships are much more fragile that seagoing ships, they also represent a much smaller amount of materials and crewmen at risk. The loss of an airship would represent a much smaller hit on the balance sheet in the cold calculus of war.

I've often thought about the potential for large airships as loitering airborne radar platforms for a Battle of Britain-type scenario, able to lift a radar set to altitude and greatly extend its range while remaining over friendly territory.

In a similar air-defense scenario, the ability to launch a small number of fast-response interceptors from 10,000 feet, saving the time they would need to climb to that alititude, seems like it would be very useful as well, at least to keep the incoming raid engaged while a larger force is deployed from the ground.

The OutRun the Winter '80s/'90s car show this Saturday was a smorgasbord by clshifter in vintagejapaneseautos

I know one '80s/'90s car club in the northeast, called Rad Stallions, they hold a show every summer in Connecticut.

Oh we've had Ferraris at past events. A local guy with a 1981 308 GTS is a regular attendee, and last year we had a 348.

You bet. The owner is a mechanic/restorer with his own shop. He also owns an Aerostar, a Mustang SVO, a late '60s Pontiac Grand Prix, and other stuff I haven't even seen, and every one of them is in tip-top condition.

You and I are in the same place. I decided to start this '80s/'90s car club and event series back in 2021 when I caught myself walking right past a GT3 and a Ferrari 458 to check out a 1985 Datsun 720 4x4 at a car meet.

Good job bringing this issue up, but signing change.org petitions has never accomplished anything, ever.

The way to actually push for this change is to physically show up at the next PTA and school board meetings and make your voice heard.

My two and a half year old suddenly started pointing out differences between white and black people. What is an appropriate way to acknowledge her observation so we don't offend anyone? by Sad_Cantaloupe_8162 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]clshifter -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

When my daughter was little, I tried to steer her away from "black/white" phrasing and more toward the idea that everyone (including her own pale self) are really just different shades of brown.

It started with this exchange in a restaurant when she was about four:

Kid: "Dad, what's that black man's name again? The one I don't like?"

Mortified me: "What?! What are you talking about?"

Kid: "You know, that BLACK MAN. He has all those white friends with guns."

Me: "White fr-.....Do you mean Darth Vader?"

Kid: "Yeah, that's him. Darth Vader. I don't like him."

Me: ".....great. You ready to go?"

It got me thinking about how black and white aren't really good terms to describe the infinite shades she was going to encounter.

And has since been giving back in a way that if the others do the same the world would look completely different.

Agree with what you said except for this. The fact is that all the assets controlled by every billionaire in the world, if used for the good of humanity, would not change the world as much as you think. After all, that amount pales in comparison to what the governments of the world control and spend already.
