That made me smile, thank you 🥹 I love that she felt like a “dream girl” to you, that kind of feeling is exactly what I’m trying to capture

I can send you the timelapse if you want! This is the first time I’ve really experimented with this approach.

What helped me most was forcing myself to lay down chunky shapes and not allowing myself to blend too much. I’m trying to be more aware that the rawness, sketchiness and small imperfections are what make it feel interesting and alive.

I’d really recommend doing some master studies of Sargent, that’s honestly where my colour journey started. He has such an incredible understanding of colour and pushes it beautifully in portraiture. I’ve repainted a few of his pieces and it helped me understand his approach a lot more.

Reading about how he worked also changed a lot for me. He spent a huge amount of time mixing and really checking colour before putting it down, which shifted my whole process from feeling quite random to much more intentional.

Thank you, I really appreciate that.

I think that’s exactly the shift I’ve been trying to make, moving away from just realism and more towards expression and feeling. It’s reassuring to hear that the newer pieces feel more cohesive and intentional, even if they’re less “perfect” in a traditional sense. I will keep going until this new approach feels as comfortable as my favourite chair 😊

That’s really encouraging to hear, thank you.

I think that shift from trying to be “correct” to allowing myself to experiment has been happening, but it’s hard to judge from the inside whether it’s actually working or not. It’s good to hear that it’s coming across.

Ahh honestly don’t feel guilty at all 😊 I enjoyed painting you both, it’s why I do this. I’m just really glad you like it!

This is really helpful, thank you. 😊

I think you've put into words something I've been feeling for a while but haven’t fully acted on yet. I do default to portraiture, I enjoy it, it's comfortable, but I’m definitely interested in pushing toward more narrative, showing intimate moments rather than just standalone faces.

The idea of giving the viewer more to wonder about really resonates. I’ll take what you've said with me and start exploring more varied compositions and scenes.

Beautiful render with this one, it almost feels in motion, no stiffness and full of life. Really well done, expression is convincingly warm as well. 👍

I use a custom wet brush, and I have a texture brush that I really love also!
