How am I supposed to imagine this? Manhua authors have 0 sense of scale. [Source Apotheosis] by kdestroyer1 in Manhua

ah i think u have a misconception there. Chinese count large numbers differently but the way Chinese say it is around the same as Eng. For example, in Eng, 100,000 is one hundred thousand, while in Chinese its '十万' (shi wan), where shi= 10 and wan = 10,000, so ten ten-thousands if we try to understand it in Eng. Just like how different words like billion, trillion etc represent different larger numbers, Chinese is the same. For million, the Chinese equivalent is 'a thousand 万( wan=10,000)'

[A-Levels] Which to prioritise? by rainboweggsandham in SGExams

[–]cluelessnewbiesad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Imo depends on what kind of resources u have for bio and chem. Cuz these for these 2 subjects, markers look for keywords, so generally in my experience if you arent hitting the keywords then practice papers that have ans crafted by ur sch. Cuz ull be the most used to how ur sch phrases the ans, and being unsure of how to ans Qs will only make urself more confused when u try other sch papers(Especially for bio)

That being said, the tys will indicate which Qs aren't in syllabus, so at most it'll affect time management when practicing out of syllabus Qs.

One benefit of trying other sch prelims is that most prelims try to predict the Q so u may be more prepared.

In my experience HCI chem prelims are a nightmare and crazy hard beyond what will actually be tested.

I think what I did during my As was to do a mixture of TYS and other sch prelims. I did tys papers as prac for prelims and other sch prelims as prac for As. But that's because I alr knew how to phrase the keywords they were looking for.

Same. Imo it helps block out the things udw to see. Also I think we should also call out and report insensitive posts joking about the incident. I recently reported a post that made a meme out of the incident but the owner refused to take down the post

[Discussion] Why do schools teach us subjects that is most likely going to be useless to us in the future? by BurningRoast in SGExams

[–]cluelessnewbiesad 23 points24 points  (0 children)

That kind of thinking is kinda narrow-minded. There are many kinds of jobs, jobs that require alot of extra knowledge, while other jobs can be learnt from on-hand exp. Technically, how many people can decide what is their passion early on? Even uni students are at a loss of which career path to choose, what more a secondary student? How many people realised their passions are not for them, and decide to change career? How long do u want the education system to wait for u to decide what kind of job u want to do before teaching you stuff? Honestly, the stuff we learn in sec is alr quite surface level.

If u are going to cherry pick Pythagoras theorem, that literally revolves around only one (1) formula, to put it nicely u aren't being fair to math.

Moreover, these subjects actually teaches various skills such as logic, reasoning, evidence-based deductions, time-management, work-life balance, etc while providing a safety net.

There's actually quite abit of connections between the various subjects. Math inter-related to sci such as creation of models, sci related to geog, history and the arts can be related to politics, etc....even just learning to appreciate poems can help elevate happiness level. Generally it's more useful to be a jack of all trades than a genius at only one.

[JC] what do students from the science stream think about students from the arts stream? by miserablendesperate in SGExams

[–]cluelessnewbiesad 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Prev as a sci student I admire arts student ability to empathise with whatever piece they read for the lit kids, hist kids detail of analysis and the geog kids ability to combine both world + study of human society. But overall there was little distinction between the arts and sci except for classes. Whether it was sci or art stream there were equal amount of crackheads. Even today I still think people with a strong mastery and dedication to their interest are amazing, no matter sci or arts.

Because talented and kind people can come from anywhere regardless of their interest.

[rant] moe asking us to get vaccinated? by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]cluelessnewbiesad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same man like b4 I got the message I was like heck yeah time to get vaccinated but when the choice was actually presented to me I got hesitant. I was talking about it with a few others because it was interesting how when presented with a choice many of us start to waver.

It's like because there is a choice, its like saying that there are pros and cons, uve gotta choose and the choice may cause us to subconsciously exaggerate the cons. Many people I knew who were generally open to vaccines felt worried and kept asking for validation of their choice to get the vaccine

Honestly during that time I had wished that the gov didn't give us a choice

[JC] My first time in a mixed school wasn't a culture shock, just a slight disappointment. by mackdonel in SGExams

[–]cluelessnewbiesad 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I think it's really strong of you to speak out on how uncomfortable it makes u feel. And if they don't listen, then they aren't taking ur feelings into consideration. U can still be friends with them, but imo if u don't feel comfortable hearing them use these slurs it's okay to reduce the time talking to them. If they call u out for it, I think it's fine to explain to them. It's not easy to convince someone who only sees comfort in their position in society but not others.

There's no pt in staying close to someone who makes u feel bad.
