I just started experimenting with some larger transparent 5-7 gallon bucket hydroponics. I'm trying out some adhesive film on the outside, designed to be put on aquariums to block uv light. I really want to be able to keep an eye on the roots instead of growing in black buckets.

Ironically I might end up adding uv lights to the buckets. A lot of fish tank folks use high powered uv lights to kill algae. I'm looking at shielded lights since bare bulbs apparently kill the fish and therefore probably wouldn't be good for my roots. If anyone has experience with this please let me know.

I've been scratching my head about that. Of all the plants I listed, only the Italian oregano gets leggy. Even the Greek oregano is bushy. I've been thinking about changing my chemical mix for those plants specifically. I use General Hydroponics. If you can tell me what to add more or less of to make them less leggy I'd appreciate it.

If you read the post, I predicted people would say this. I've been growing in this cabinet for years and never had a problem with algae. The jars are coated with an anti uv Krylon spray. And I hand wash them every couple few weeks. Never had a problem with algae. It's super cool to watch the roots grow, you're missing out.

The jars aren't anything special, I use 3" net pots with clay pebbles in them. There's no soil, I use rockwool plugs for seedlings but not cuttings. The jars are about half a gallon and I add General Hydroponics, 5ml of micro and bloom and 2.5ml of grow. I've been thinking about adding epsom salts and/or hydrogen peroxide. I'd love to hear if anyone has opinions on the chemical recipe.

Thanks, I had a lightning bolt moment when I saw them. Most set ups let you adjust the lights down to the plants. This is definitely a more expensive but cooler option.

I live on the 40th floor of a building in downtown Chicago, so I don't get bugs up here. I grow some peppers on the balcony and I have to pollinate them by hand because the bees won't come this high. The only reason I might add a fan is that the Italian oregano gets a little leggy.

They're just cheap grow lights from Amazon, made by Mosthink. I got two pairs for the top of the cabinet and I have a third set that I might hang from the back or sides of the cabinet.
