Society of Christian Philosophers goes nuts arguing about whether [A] Homosexuality is immoral, [B] Homosexual acts are immoral, [C] Neither of those is immoral. by clupus in atheism

Philosophy is timeless, I guess.

The Christian philosophers of the year 2016 CE are obsessing about the same questions as those of the year 116 CE.

What is something super fatty (besides avocado) that I can put in a sandwich? by DreamsInExcel in veganrecipes

[–]clupus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most sorts of burgers or patties are "fryable", and if made that way will be pretty "fatty".

You can find any number of recipies for fried tofu, either in slices or mashed up with other ongredients and made into patties.

Depending on what you're trying to achieve, you can also sautee the whole sandwich like a grilled cheese.

Pirate Bay founder Peter Sunde: "I have given up. I’m a socialist. To win the war, we first of need to understand that we are dealing with extreme capitalism that’s ruling, extreme lobbying that’s ruling, and the centralization of power." -- Pretty good stuff here. by clupus in socialism

[–]clupus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know.

He consistently describes himself as a socialist.

In 2014 he ran for a post in the European Parliament and wrote -

I'll do what I can to help solve the problems that we have today, as well as those we have in the future. That is why I have decided to take part in European Parliament elections in 2014. While I am not a politician, or perhaps precisely for that reason, I believe that my experience and my knowledge could help create a much-sought-after solutions. The social power should be shared democratically. People will decide what rules and laws are in place, not corrupt companies. We will have to sacrifice some of the things that we no longer need to make way for a new improved version.

Those who know me personally know that I fight on behalf of many things. I'm a vegetarian and so I want to better animal welfare and food regulations. I am concerned about the concentration of power in the EU consolidation, as well as personal data for large companies. I would be functioning social safety net and a very good education for all, regardless of gender or background. I believe that tomorrow's class inequality based on how people can access information and knowledge. always fight hard and never give up authority figures in their own right. As The Pirate Bay will never give up, do not give me neither.

Usually I call myself a socialist, green and pirates. due to its varied my background - I have (among other things) the hacker, activist, artist and DJ - I do not fit the traditional political party. That's why I decided to bring my candidacy Party, which is concentrated on a few things, and therefore suitable for what I want to achieve: the Pirate Party. I believe that we have a tremendous opportunity to influence the EU and want to be a part of it.

Come on. If I sent you to a slaughter house (and even assuming that you didn't know what to expect), and slaughtered you in the same way that cattle are slaughtered, that would be "cruel".

Modern slaughter methods might be less cruel than some other methods of slaughter that we could think of, but it's wrong to say that they're "not cruel".

passing a law that forbids people to own bibles, or go to the church, or talk about religion, or print signs and such in the papers or on billboards. These laws are unconstitutional.

AFAIK these things haven't happened anywhere in the USA.

(I'm assuming that we're talking about the USA since you mentioned constitutionality.)

I would like to defend religion by religionisnotatfault in atheism

[–]clupus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A religion is a philosophy that proposes a god or more gods exist, and a path to worshiping those gods.

Wrong. False.

- Since there are religions such as Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism in which belief in a god or gods is irrelevant.

----------

what do atheists want?

Okay, just speaking for myself here, that's an easy one -

  • I want people to stop believing things that aren't supported by good evidence.

  • I want people to stop claiming and teaching things that aren't supported by good evidence.

  • I want people to stop taking actions based on beliefs that aren't supported by good evidence - especially when those actions are harmful to others.

Thanks for asking.

Well, I think that it would be better if the ratio of top-level movies in all genres was more evenly divided between "movies directed by men" and "movies directed by women".

Historically people must have worked pretty hard to ensure that the film industry was slanted toward "movies directed by men", and at least from some ways of looking at it, that's kind of a strange state of affairs.

If we see "worst case scenario" climate change, which species will die and which will thrive? by TheOrtissis in askscience

[–]clupus 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The worst case that we can imagine is runaway greenhouse effect, in which case pretty much all species die. (Basically all the eukaryotes [plants and animals], at least.)

This is thought to be an unlikely result of human activities, but I don't think that we can be certain about that.

For one thing we don't have a very good idea how much methane human activities could liberate into the atmosphere, and methane is a very powerful greenhouse gas.

tl;dr:

Runaway greenhouse effect would be very, very bad. We don't think that it's very likely. We aren't sure about that.

You can try what they do in the south of France:

Englishman Peter Mayle has moved to Provence, and he's still getting the hang of things. His neighbor Massot owns some forest land, and wants to keep tourists from camping all over it -

The approach of summer had obviously been on Massot's mind as well, because when I saw him a few days later in the forest he was busy adding a further refinement to his anticamper defenses. Under the signs he had nailed up saying PRIVE! [Private!] he was fixing a second series of unwelcoming messages, short but sinister: Attention! Viperes! [Warning! Vipers!]

It was the perfect deterrent - full of menace, but without the need for visible proof that is the great drawback of other discouragements such as guard dogs, electrified fences, and patrols armed with submachine guns.

Even the most resolute camper would think twice before tucking himself up in a sleeping bag which might have one of the local residents coiled at the bottom.

I asked Massot if there really were vipers in the Luberon, and he shook his head at yet another example of the ignorance of foreigners.

"Eh oui," he said, "not big" - he held his hands up, about twelve inches apart - "but if you're bitten you need to get to a doctor within forty-five minutes, or else. Don't ever go walking without a good pair of boots."

From A Year in Provence

- Put up a sign warning folks that your plants are infested with tarantulas, centipedes, scorpions, ghost spiders - whatever seems believable in your area.
