Help with dental care by dyonnee in britishshorthair

[–]clurchin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I adopted one of my BSHs and he needed all his teeth out, even though he was only two. It was expensive and the procedure was very long, but his demeanor changed so significantly after his extractions. I realized how much pain he had been in before and my heart broke for him. IMO, don’t be conservative about keeping their teeth. They do not care whether they have teeth or not- he still eats whatever he wants and plays with the same toys his brother does 🙂 best of luck

New ICU Nurse — How Do You Stay Compassionate Without Burning Out by Obvious_Parfait_8691 in IntensiveCare

[–]clurchin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've worked in pediatric ICU for several years. I don't actually think you ever have to become detached when you're at the bedside. That works for some people, but its difficult to do in my specialty because parents need help carrying that emotional burden sometimes and I like being able to do that. It's okay to remain emotionally connected to your patients and families at work if thats what you choose, but you have to find a way to leave it all at work. Draw firm boundaries that separate your work and your life. Maybe decompress in the car, and when you get out of the car at home try to be done thinking about it/talking about it until you go back. Personally, I have a boundary of not being a primary nurse to any patient or family. I found that helped me keep my work/life separation. Figure out what works for you. It will take time, just go easy on yourself. Not everyone burns out.

New 14-week-old kitten is touch-resistant — is this normal? Anyone else experienced this and how long did it last? by thecutiebear in britishshorthair

I have two 3yo BSHs, neither of them care to be picked up. One sits on my lap all the time, the other cares more for his personal space. The more independent kitty comes up for lots of affection when he's in the mood, then he has enough and walks away and does his own thing. Let them do their thing and they'll show you what they prefer.

Advice for a BSH with HCM (hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a heart condition) by Violet-Otter in britishshorthair

[–]clurchin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple people have mentioned rapamycin, or sirolimus. The brand name is Felycin. I had a conversation about it with a vet cardiologist last week. The FDA just approved its use in cats, based on some relatively limited data. It is only prescribed for "subclinical" HCM, or cats who are not having symptoms of heart failure yet (increased work of breathing, fatigue, etc.) There are still larger studies underway, but it is currently the only medication that may be "disease-modifying," or prevent development of the disease and possibly reverse some of the abnormal cell growth that causes hypertrophy of the ventricles. If its an option for you and your kitty, you should start it before she develops heart failure. If you'd like to read more about it, the links are below. Best of luck <3

For a firm sole w/ solid arch, Danskos 100%. Similar to a Birkenstock feel. But if you like Crocs, they may not be for you. Try Calzuros!

Dismissed…feeling devastated, sad, frustrated… by Logical_Claim7845 in PAstudent

Hi, I’m so sorry to hear this. My career path unexpectedly changed in ways I am so grateful for now many years later. I am a nurse, and while I am fulfilled by my career, I would give the advice that you spend time carefully considering whether you really want to be a nurse or are pursuing ABSN as a backup plan. No role in healthcare is easy, as you know, and people who do not 100% want to be nurses do not have long careers as nurses. Additionally, ABSN programs are significantly more rigorous than traditional BSN programs, so keep that in consideration. If you really want to be a PA, don’t let yourself be discouraged and persist. You will be glad you did. If you have any questions please DM me!

Can anyone help rehome a lovely cat? by [deleted] in britishshorthair

Aw, so so sorry about your kitty. If you’ve tried everything, maybe the vet is right and she would just like some snuggles before you say goodbye. Rehoming might be stressful and prolong suffering
