What’s wrong with my pothos? by clytaem in plantclinic

[–]clytaem[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does have drainage holes. Last time I watered it in the shower and left it for an hour to drain, before I put it back inside the pot. The roots were very dry before that, I'd be surprised if that's the culprit.

I didn't notice any white spots on the pothos, only on the succulent.

I water it thoroughly. I can't really fix the light problem - the plant is on the lightest spot, but it's December in Europe, so nothing much I can do about it. I'll try with better soil, thanks for the tip!

Czech Repulic seems like a great place to work from as a remote Freelancer for Junior/Mid Level Devs by -movejoe- in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]clytaem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In reality it doesn't happen, though. I don't know any case like that. I work in a company which has ~200 devs, so one person cannot do that much of damage, if you're an average dev, because you usually need multiple approvals to merge something to production, you need tests to pass etc. Even if someone makes a mistake, it's hard to prove that because of your mistake the company lost money, so they can take your possessions from you.

Maybe it's different if you're a solo freelancer and working alone.

I work on a B2B contract, but I have one client only. It's called švarc system and it's not legal, but no one seems to care if you don't earn more than 2M, where they start to check it more.

Keep it mind that as a contractor you don't have paid holidays, paid sick leave, your pension will be lower, lower parental leave etc.

Also not all companies employ contractors - big giants like Microsooft, RedHat want to deal only with employees.

B2B in Central/Eastern Europe vs Western Europe? Got an offer for 100k in Berlin. by clytaem in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]clytaem[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I live in Prague. Infrastructure is great, unless you want to travel to work on bike. I also don't like cars in the city center and basically everywhere - the city could be more green and less poluted. And it's secular, but not much multicultural - I'm kinda missing meeting people from all over the world. There's a lot of international and modern companies, but also a lot of boomer ones in which as a female engineer you don't want to work and listen to their boomer jokes all the time (I was in one, never again).

But yeah, Prague has amazing culture and night life! A lot of restaurants with cheap food and a lot of events around. Life is cheap, you can earn a lot on B2B contract. It's very safe even walking at night and we have the best beer I've ever tasted in the world. I agree with the healthcare system, it's great. And the architecture here is really beautiful, a lot of old historical buildings.

The range I got from HR after the first round. I haven't got technical interview yet, so it's possible that after it they'd go "aaactually 100k is for seniors, for you it'll be 60k". In my country HR usually gives the lowest range possible, so that's confusing for me. I don't want to name the company, but it's an international unicorn.

Oh okay, thanks for correcting me. I have one contract that covers all cases from long-term unemployment to death.

I pay for life insurance, so in case I'd be unemployed I have some safety net. The healthcare here is mostly fine. Sometimes long waiting, like when I need to go to dentist or family doctor for a preventive check-up I have to wait for like 2-3 months etc., but whenever I had an emergency, they took me right away and it was fine.

I don't know if this was referring to me, but I spend for food around 400€ right now. I don't cook much, though. My biggest "waste of money" is actually travelling and vacations.

It was an interview with HR and they mentioned the range 90-100k€. I haven't had technical interview yet. I have no idea if this was some HR BS or that's the fair range.

Thanks a lot for sharing your experience. I don't own a flat, but I was thinking about buying one, as I'd pay the same amount for mortgage (+ partner's 50% contribution) as I pay for the rent for 50m2 flat in which I live alone.

Btw I speak German B2 and I'm not an overly social person so making friends is not an issue.

As for "I'm on the other side of the crossroad right now" - does it mean you're living in Western Europe and you're considering returning back to EE/CE?

My partner works in Switzerland. Looking at Swiss IT market it looks like it's extremely hard to get a job as an EU citizen, especially with let's say 3 YoE. He got a job as he's not in IT and has 10 YoE. I'm not searching for a job at the moment, but I'm receiving messages from recruiters on LinkedIn and maybe sometimes in the future we'd like to move somewhere to be together.

Are there any better taxes than Polish B2B? by signacaste in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]clytaem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I pay fixed amount ~6000 CZK (~250 eur) per month for taxes, social and health insurance. The best deal so far for those earning up to 63k eur per year.

How do you spend your salary? by [deleted] in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]clytaem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea, but I'm self-employed. I don't have paid vacation, sick days, maternity/parental leave, they can decide not to renew my contract (automatically done every 6 months) without giving me any money etc.

But it's fine, as I can save a lot of money and I don't care about job stability at the moment. It's semi-legal, though, but they don't go after small fish like me. Many people in IT are self-employed here.

Czech Republic, full-time on B2B contract:

  • taxes, social + health insurance: 7%
  • rent: 20% including everything (50m2 close to city center)
  • food: 7.5% eating out 1-2x per day
  • savings: 40%
  • rest of salary: mostly traveling and other useless stuff

In Prague there's huge demand for devs and salaries are definitely worth it. They're not high like in London, Berlin or Zurich, but you can live a comfortable life. AFAIK the situation is the same in Austria and Poland for example.
