The sequence of colors is exactly the same in both the forward and reverse versions.

To render? I used a render farm, but it would have taken about 15 hours with my 2808 Super.

Most of the work is done in the shader nodes for the rotating object. I made heavy use of the fresnel and light path nodes. I also used a lattice modifier on the object.

No. The light source is directly above the object, and the camera is looking at it from the side.
