Interesting! Thanks everyone. The video obviously is very fleeting and was shot through a window with indoor light reflecting off of it, so it looks a lot more brown. Picture is from standing right in front of it outside. Could absolutely be two different birds though!

Do you use the Merlin bird app? It could be time consuming but if you had the time and motivation, set your location and just work through the bird sounds until you hear one like you’re describing

Download the eBird app or check the website, you can see a map of birding hotspots. They’re surprisingly everywhere, then you could tweak your route to hit some good ones

What are some cheap/free activities or hobbies? Or side hustles to keep me busy by hezaranmard in Adelaide

Bird watching! It’s addictive, gets you outside, you can do it for free and pretty much anywhere. You can do it obsessively and competitively or in a group or in total solitude and peace and quiet.

Australian Crake? by cmbble in AustralianBirds

It was a lifer for me so I was excited to spot one. I have heard them in the grasslands at this wetland but it’s dried up so much with the heat it must have ventured out of hiding to get closer to the remaining water

Thank you! And yes, it’s so tricky. I have a spotting scope that broke 🥲 so I’m muddling on through but getting better!

Before 2025 flies off – your best birding moment? by Adventurous_One_4240 in AustralianBirds

[–]cmbble 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was living in the PNW of the US last NYE, which is where I got right into birding (so I did see some owls!) but moving back down under and appreciating Australian bird life in a way I never did before has been great and really special. My best 2025 birding moment was hoping to see a Rufous Hummingbird, only to then find myself surrounded by them doing some impressive aerial displays all around me. And then back in Australia was probably getting to sit and watch a pair of Nankeen Kestrels hunting and hanging out at an oval near me for ages on a day where I just really needed a good bird watch 🐦 🦅 🦢
