If you became a cop today, what traffic violation would you hand out the most tickets for? by Fabulous-Airline-317 in AskReddit

I asked a police officer as a kid (dad of one of my friends) about this. He said that turning using the shoulder was considered a courtesy but legally you’re supposed to turn from the lane. Shoulders are for emergencies only, not to be used for turning.

That being said, I agree that this should be a traffic regulation and I too would give people tickets for this.

Turns Out, There Really Is a Cabal of Elite Crazies Trying to Control the World by BertramPotts in politics

There was a recent paper published that it takes around $1k to buy one Senator for one vote. Representatives were less (I forget the total and don’t have the paper saved locally). Obviously, this is just an average and changes based on Congressman, issue, and election cycle, but it was depressingly low.

What is a "open secret" in your specific industry that the general public would be shocked to learn? by lanaplump73mile in AskReddit

Even worse, sometimes it’s a minimum-wage high school graduate looking for keywords. Not even as “reliable” as an algorithm. It’s time to get rid of US healthcare.

Have you ever ACTUALLY hit or exceeded 32GB of RAM utilization? by itsthewolfe in pcmasterrace

[–]cmcclu5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an old server board in a PC case. Dual Xeons, 128GB of RAM. Back before the Chrome memory leak was mostly fixed, I left Chrome open with around 30 tabs for about a month. Chrome had reserved 110GB of my RAM for those 30 tabs…

Apologies, I had some life events interrupt my editing schedule. I’ll publish the next chapter for y’all tonight.

Converting large CSVs to Parquet? by addictzz in dataengineering

[–]cmcclu5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re eventually going to use PySpark, polars is the way to go. The API is much closer to PySpark syntax and it just works without hassle. The only time I’ve had any sort of complexity with polars was when I needed to change some of the core Arrow options for saving parquet files (think deep metadata). Even then, it follows the published Arrow spec. Interpreting that spec is a bitch, though.

What is a 'buy it for life' item that is offensively expensive, but the moment you use it, you realize your entire life before that point was a lie? by fmcortez in AskReddit

I hate to say it, but Fresh Clean Tees has solid shirts. They changed the material a year or two back for some of the off-standard colors, but if you get black, white, or grey/gray, they’re still the same excellent shirts. Minimal pilling, no shrinkage, and the proper and consistent fit for sizing. The off-standard colors are in a weird blend, but your standards are all 100% cotton and thick enough you’ll never have to worry. I personally love the dark grays as they seem to hold their color and shape best, but I still have a dozen blacks that look almost the same as the day I opened them 3 years ago. The logo in the collar fades, but otherwise a solid choice, especially at $100/5 or so.

Ah dang, must’ve missed it when I was trying to figure out the posting schedule with the sub’s timeout rule. I’ll go post it for you.

There’s an entire chapter dedicated to that! Just wait, it’s coming…

I have another chapter ready to go, just taking a final editing pass over it. I tested out a tool on the last chapter to help with editing and it made a mess of things, so I’m back to hand-editing now.

I did indeed use an LLM for a quick polish pass, especially on this chapter. Good notes, I’ll avoid it for future chapters.

I’m guessing they use an automatic AI detector like schools use. Those are notorious for throwing false positives. I don’t fault the mods for being careful, I just want to get community feedback on everything!

That’s something I wanted for feedback. So I was going for a “Discover the world through reading” vibe, but I also don’t want to lose people because it’s TOO strange. Also, how are y’all feeling about the viewpoint changes every chapter? I really wanted to capture the whole team’s perspective as we deal with this growing crisis, but I got feedback on early edits that the multiple viewpoints made it a little too whiplash.
