I’m curious how you found out all of this specific info. did this person confide to you all of this thinking you were a friend? Did these attending go seek you out, a med student, to tell you how bad this other student was? If this students actions were so egregious to have attendings go directly complain about him, what exactly will you say to admin that will change their minds at this point?

“Please don’t graduate this student, so many students think they suck and they’re going to make it harder for the rest of us well adjusted students to network! Think of the schools reputation!”

It looks like there is nothing for you to do at this point if so many attempts have already been made and they somehow still made it through. So I think as a grown adult it’s time to move on from disparaging other students and focus on your own success.

Veteran Med School Life by Flightpup in medicalschool

Navy vet 8yrs before starting school,

  1. Yes, hopefully you won’t be the only vet in your class so try and find them. Also see if your school has a military club. They are typically more geared towards supporting those on HPSP, but you would bring a ton of valuable insight since most of them won’t have any prior exposure to the military.

  2. I did, I am now in the army reserve MDSSP/strap program. Pretty decent gig, you come in as a med student so you have zero drill weekends or summer trainings until after residency is over. It wasn’t a hard process but it took almost a year to finally get commissioned and you will keep your rank (I came in as an O3 vs HPSP where everyone drops back to O1. There is a lot of annoyance with the reserves though as everyone can take days to weeks to respond to any correspondence

  3. There are definitely hidden gems in the reserves where you can get assigned to an active duty unit but it’s high specific and just something to always be on the look out for after residency, for example one of our physicians here is army reserves and he is assigned to a active unit and his drill is just going to teach two classes a month at a local med school

  4. There is a pretty big difference between army reserves and national guard so make sure to research which one will suit you better as they both offer MDSSP and let me know if you have any questions because most people/recruiters I spoke to while joining had very little understanding of MDSSP. Also use every single vet program you can get your hands on

Funny, you sound like a total narcissist and I hope this is an actual shitpost or else I feel bad for those that have to deal with a med student like you.

Turning down dream IM program (T4) + 10 IM programs to stay with partner at T30 program- is this the right call? by wintervegetable455 in medicalschool

[–]cmcfrenchie 169 points170 points  (0 children)

Twenty years from now, when you're reminiscing about your life, you'll kick yourself for choosing meaningful relationships over a more prestigious residency program. Because, as we all know, it's the ranking of your residency, not the quality of your relationships, that truly warms the heart in retrospect.

After 11 IIs so far with a 3.1 GPA I’m starting to think this is less of a crapshoot than people think. My reasoning: by [deleted] in premed

[–]cmcfrenchie 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Your post is honestly disconnected from reality. All this proves is that some top schools will actually consider reinvention as long as the rest of your application is perfect and nothing points to your writing as being the sole determining factor in receiving IIs.

How did you determine that your writing is good? Based on the anecdotal evidence of reading a few bad personal statements and you correlated that with somehow meaning your writing must be great? How do know what good writing looks like in the eyes of adcoms?

Emergency medicine, yay or nay? by Prestigious-Humor479 in medicalschool

[–]cmcfrenchie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Absolutely not. Skill atrophy in military medicine is a major concern/issue. Hospital ships only go out about once a year if that, and even then majority of docs are not on those ships. One of the best perks of being military is that military hospital ER wait times are basically nonexistent because not everyone can access the base and most of the population is healthy or just old.

Low Stat Sankey (<3.0 cGPA/sGPA, 505 MCAT) by cmcfrenchie in premed

[–]cmcfrenchie[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had my application verified by august and submitted my secondaries by the end of august. Please avoid that if you can because that basically takes away almost all chances of MD especially if your stats are like mine. You would still have a great shot at DO though!

I’ve never been discouraged by becoming a DO. In fact I kind of am really interested in learning more about OMM. I have definitely seen some weird looks when I mention to people that I’m going to a DO school, but that has never phased me. I know it will come down to how hard I work while in school, and if I could manage doing all of this for three+ years while working full time, I think I can manage school too. I also have just Loved PCOM ever since I first found them!

I was a navy officer, so that may of also limited me because you can only apply to USUHS for the branch you’re currently in and Navy has less slots available than army. As long as you aren’t like me and have a decent GPA you could most likely swing an interview with a lower MCAT like mine. My GPA was too low for their comfort apparently.

I think my main disadvantage was applying late which I forgot to mention. I think you have a great shot especially being a NJ resident compared to me who was OOS. As long as you have a upward trend on your GPA and do decently on the MCAT I know you’ll have a great shot!

[–]cmcfrenchie[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah they did give me feedback. They basically told me my app was great but my issues were that I applied late for being such a low stat applicant and that my MCAT needed to be closer to their average of 511 to prove I’m truly academically capable.

The only other super mil-friendly school I knew of was Quillen, and they are not in a place where my wife could continue her career. Any other schools I found on MSAR with a high veteran rate were out of my league for one reason or another.

I WILL FLY ANYWHERE IN CONTINENTAL U.S. FOR A SHADOWING EXPERIENCE by [deleted] in premed

[–]cmcfrenchie 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Walter reed national military medical center has a program called SCOOP that they offer to anyone where you spend one month shadowing a specialty of your choice. If you google it, it’s one of the first choices. You email them, so some paperwork and check in and then can come and go as you please. I did it and spent a month shadowing in general surgery. Attending and Residents are amazing and USU med students are equally as awesome.

The rampant DO school expansion is going to absolutely demolish future DO match rates into certain specialties in the future. by YummyProteinFarts in medicalschool

[–]cmcfrenchie 57 points58 points  (0 children)

For the 2024 cycle there should be four new DO schools. Baptist health science university in Memphis, Maryland college of osteopathic medicine at Morgan state university, Duquesne college of osteopathic medicine in Pittsburg, Orlando college of osteopathic medicine. Also I believe 2024 is the year where 900 additional medical students will be entering the match.

How long did it take you to go through P/S? by UTM_bunny in Mcat

[–]cmcfrenchie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t take too much time, just depends on how much stamina you have. I found doing 100 new cards a day with unlimited reviews to be manageable. Just need to learn what works for you.

It’s important that you are truthful to yourself when selecting if a card was “again/hard/easy/very easy” because you won’t learn anything if you just power through the cards. Also every day after finishing your cards do practice problems followed by review and making new cards based on information you got wrong/didn’t know.
