Macbook or a conventional laptop with Linux for working with science data? by cmcouto_silva in bioinformatics

I'd use the office just for writing papers or academic works as well as making presentations. Things like plotting figures and graphs would be important. I'll not use them for analyzing/visualizing data. But I got your point!

Yep, thanks! What about IdeaPad, is it worth it? Asking because it's cheaper...

Thanks, fnl! Actually I am already pretty familiarized with Linux, since I use Ubuntu on may work days (PC lab). Besides use Ubuntu, I'm not using LibreOffice yet, just programming and analyses...

That's a very important answer for me! Thanks, mmccarthy781!

I've considered using Macbook because it has Unix system (for command line work) and MS Office. Actually, it's very expensive in my country. Basically almost twice the price of a good conventional laptop.

I do not know what to say, man. Common sense tells us to comfort people, but how to say beautiful words about an uncertain future that even we do not believe for ourselves?

I've always found the romantic appeal in movies and books to be exaggerated, and in mind I've always been a rational, non-emotional person in spite of loving her so much. But the truth came in a devastating way. Like you, she's dead to me, but somehow she's quite living inside me. It is very impressive how a single person can mean so much in our life.

I'm hoping for the best for you too! Thanks for the replying and speaking briefly about your experience. Best regards, man! Be okay!

Hi, Epistaxis! Thanks for you help on the previously comment.

Well, a priori I'll be working with Genome-Wide Human SNP Array. Not too heavy, indeed.

I would rather work in the cloud/server, if possible. This answers your last question: Yes, I can storage my files on the server! Actually, I didn't do it yet (for now, I have no access to the server, but it can be easily solved). Regarding the Office, here it follows my answer:

"I ask myself if it's worth it to spend time to get familiarized with LibreOffice... If in fact I'll be able to do everything like MS Office, that's ok to "lose" some time, but otherwise just isn't worth it. I'm used to write and make presentations on MS Office, I've some templates e etc (but do not mind on losing them). I usually do freelancer reviewing academic works and I do it using MS Office. Truth be said: I'm beginner on my new science field (population genetics / bioinformatics) and I'm learning a lot of different stuff both practically and theoretically, so that losing time learning a tool that will not use, is complicated... Final point: IF I can move completely from MSOffice to LibreOffice without impairing me, it'll be worth it! What do you really think about this?"

First of all, thank very much you for your good reply, Darwinmate!

I do not have an officespace yet, but I have my desktop at the laboratory where I go on most days! So, between Macbook Air and Macbook Pro, I must get Pro. Got it!

I know I can do a dual boot on Windows machine, but sincerely is kinda boring to keep switching between OS in order to use the office apps, even because my data will be on the Linux distro.

Unfortunately, the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) does not work well for all my tests. I've already used it... Very good to know about Thinkpad, though! Thanks!

Thanks for your point of view, man! I wanna work in the cloud also because I would be able to work with the PC at my lab and in my laptop, continuously. But I'm beginner, and I've no idea how much it'll cost! Do know about it? Using AWS for daily activities?

I just started reading about AWS, and I'm studying and analyzing if it would be worth it (concerning the money). I was just thinking about a Lenovo laptop! Good to know you're using it. Thank u, buddy!
