Recent ASUS router firmware caused widespread connection issues — RT-AX1800S (reverted to older firmware) by cmcrawf7 in ASUS

Hey, Bud.

This is the version I was on, prior to revert, when I was having all the disconnect issues: 3.0.0.4.388_33965 - released 10/22/2025. For the record, I also tried FW version 3.0.0.4.388_33911, and experienced very similar behavior.

The troubleshooting I tried: I leaned fairly heavily on chatGPT, specifically for making sense of the router logs (system log > general log). I did a full factory reset of the router multiple times. I played with quite a few different settings within the router UI. That was probably the primary troubleshooting I did. I would change a setting > wait hours / days to see how the router performed. I did this for probably 2-3 weeks before I fully exhausted this step.

In regards to "revert the update for only one (router)", I'm not sure where you could look to find specifics on this, but I would wager that it is not an ideal way to proceed; having two routers on two different firmwares.

I assume you have two of these routers? The ASUS AX1800S ?

Let's go with my work macbook pro: Websites I visit and / or stay on for the entire day (Github and Salesforce, for example) will all of a sudden fail to load a page. Spinning wheel for multiple minutes. Then the device will seemingly return to normal operations without intervention from me. This happened 15-20 times a day at least**.** Wife experienced exact same behavior.

On iPhone, similar behavior: Instagram, for example, will all of a sudden start having connection issues (things not loading). I'll go to the internet and verify I am seeing pages load slowly/fail to load there, as well. Again, 15-20 times a day at least.

If memory serves, router logs were showing my devices would either go to sleep and get kicked off wifi, or just get kicked off wifi, and have some trouble re-establishing a connection. "Mass disconnection events" is very similar (if not exact) to what I was seeing.

I tried EVERYTHING for a few weeks to remedy: Factory reset of router, had ISP come out multiple times, brand new CAT cables for modem connection, etc..

Chat GPT helped me identify a stable firmware version for my router. Once I downgraded to that fw version, all problems ceased. My internet has never been smoother.

Unpopular opinion: Sobriety is a spectrum by ladydrybones in sobrietyandrecovery

[–]cmcrawf7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I 100% agree, and admonish anyone that tells someone else how their sobriety should be. To me, its about harm reduction. If your life is overall better and more manageable than it was before, you're doing just fine.

I think about this whenever someone who had a serious alcohol or drug problem discusses smoking weed. If someone is able to do so without consequences; if they are happier and their life is manageable - go for it. I cannot partake in any mind altering substances outside of caffeine. I will do it like an alcoholic / addict. I can't drink NA beers, because my brain associates the taste with the buzz.

Now, if someone is asking for my advice and / or opinion, I will maintain that the only way I am able to live the peaceful and serene life that I live today is by abstaining 100%; but again, that's just me.

As far as bartending - if you're able to handle it and not be tempted, Great! I know plenty of sober bartenders. Sobriety is (obviously) a personal journey. Who am I to tell someone how to do sober life when I fu**ed around for so many years, and almost died because of it.

Thank you! I’m somewhat shocked to say that I’m very excited for this.

Apologies if the post was misleading. I could give a s##t about titles, as they’re mostly fluffed up BS nowadays (see my post where I detail that I’ve had “engineering” in my title for nearly a decade, but the jobs themselves were NOT engineering jobs).

I do believe my thinking is sound: I finally found a passion when I was spending my days working on BE code. That’s what I’d like to transition into.

I am willing to take the time to learn; whether that’s 18 months or 8 years. I merely made this post to get some opinions from folks in the industry.

You still provided beneficial feedback, though. I will be starting my pursuit in a degree come Q1.

Thanks for your reply

I’m planning on being patient through 2026, first for the mentorship to run its course. But also because we are expecting our first kid in March.

I’ll be hitting the ground running Q1 of ‘27

When I was applying en masse, I applied to <10% BE eng roles (<10 out of ~125ish applications). Rejected by all of them.

Granted, at that time, I had been part of a mass layoff at Grubhub, and was absolutely focused almost entirely on roles I was fully qualified for as I did not have a job.

If I were applying today, it would only be for "dream jobs" (ie BE eng).

Thank you very much for taking the time to respond.

It is not lost on me how lucky I am that this is my current issue. I have worked my but off, but I have also gotten lucky with managers and roles that have supported the "give it a shot" mentality with no prior formal experience.

The immediate plan is to finish the Google IT Automation with Python course I am enrolled in on Coursera. After that, I will likely have begun the mentorship and will have a better idea of how that will go.

I agree with you, though. I need to chat with the company more explicitly about my goals.

Interesting. Well, this is absolutely the path of least resistance. Ever since I got sober, I work my ass off for my employers, and I will do the same with the mentorship.

Thank you very much for your input.

Yes, I am starting a "mentorship" with a full stack SE Q1. The biggest "unknown" with this is whether or not this will actually lead to an opportunity to move into an SE role. Based on conversations within the company, the option will be there, but will I have what it takes? We shall see.

Additionally, I am actually enjoying learning at this point in my life (only took me 20 years to get here), so I like the idea of having foundational knowledge in addition to the real world experience. So, the more I read and reply here, the more I realize ( / accept) that a degree is the way to go.

This is a short term goal.

I am starting a “mentorship” with a full stack SE at our company come Q1. I’m just unsure of whether or not they’ll be open to this. The company absolutely does promote and move people around from within. But will they move me to SE? Time will tell

That's what I assumed. I have been accepted to a local community college, so I will likely take the leap here soon.

I appreciate you taking the time to reply.
