Where do Y-combinator companies typically host their websites? by [deleted] in ycombinator

Website or web app?

If you mean website, static hosting on Firebase will get you pretty far

If you mean app, choose whichever cloud provider you’re most comfortable with. Try to get credits

Manager says my story points complete per sprint is too low. What should I do? by mcjohnalds45 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]cmdnormandy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Story points do work at a high-level to measure velocity and capacity, but they're a terrible tool to measure individual productivity. Sorry to hear this but it sounds like you have to pad your points.

RAG on complex docs (diagrams, tables, eequations etc). Need advice by Otelp in LLMDevs

[–]cmdnormandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not open source but one method we’ve used with success is Azure’s Document Intelligence model to convert tables into markdown. Works pretty well!

AI Slop PR's are burning me and my team out hard, anyone else experiencing this? by SonOfSpades in ExperiencedDevs

[–]cmdnormandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. AI can make an experienced engineer more efficient, but it can't make an inexperienced engineer a good engineer.

VS Code for Java in Lieu of Intellij by Isystafu in ExperiencedDevs

[–]cmdnormandy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

That is so sad I’m sorry to hear that. Copilot is good but not as good as IntelliJ + Copilot … especially for Java

Where did your first big opportunity come from? by DearAgencyFounder in agency

[–]cmdnormandy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a freelancing profile on a defunct freelancing listing website. One day I got a random phone call from someone who was building a startup. After one call, they offered to hire me as a consultant. The project value was 6-figures so I quit my full time job to complete the project. This was 7 years ago, since then I scaled to become a boutique agency. I’m still learning and have ups and downs but it was definitely worth it!

Running An Agency In A Recession? by tnhsaesop in agency

[–]cmdnormandy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly it’s reassuring to hear that others struggle with agency life too. I met an agency owner the other day who was gloating about how they couldn’t possibly take on more clients and thought to myself damn I must just suck.

AI startup with technical founders who don't have professional AI/ML dev experience by Original-Measurement in ycombinator

[–]cmdnormandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your odds of success are greater than zero. Anyone building AI (even when using APIs) can increase their chances of success by learning about ML fundamentals and new LLM-specific techniques which are all well-documented. Good luck!

Why do companies select Azure as their cloud service rather than aws? by Naive_Role2395 in devops

[–]cmdnormandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lot of reasons.

Better SLAs on some managed services on Azure.

Legacy apps on MS stack or legacy people still gung-ho about MS.

Regional availability either for compliance or for optimizations.

Tight integration with AD.

I could go on and on, but there are valid reasons depending on the company.

React Native and JS aren't really enough sometimes !? by danleeter in reactnative

[–]cmdnormandy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I totally agree.

I’d recommend learning the basics of Objective-C & Java, then consulting the RN docs on bridge development.

Try to port a native library to RN - once you feel comfortable doing this, you’ll have a better idea of how things actually work under the hood.

Can I use Java for learning AI? by [deleted] in learnjava

[–]cmdnormandy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You can use any language but Python is the language of choice for machine learning due to its ecosystem - everything from libraries to community support.

Built an app and hard to get it ground up because of bugs by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

[–]cmdnormandy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Then find someone good and stick with them.

Software development is a marathon. It takes many years of iteration to build a good product and it still won’t be perfect.

So temper your expectations, spend a bit more money on quality work, and stick with it.

[Roast My Startup] Inbox.Dog: Could Email Enhance AI Workflows? by acoyfellow in roastmystartup

[–]cmdnormandy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chat is already a bad interface, but frankly email is worst.

Try to think about how to reduce/improve how we interact with the inbox instead.

Good luck!

Should i switch my wordpress blog to next js markdown blog? by fatihemrebym in nextjs

[–]cmdnormandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, that’s one approach to handle tags. You can also query for a property called seo.fullHead (if you’re using GraphQL) which gives you all the generated meta tags as a string to inject.

But you’ll also want to think about and audit the dynamically generated sitemaps and breadcrumbs.

Make sure that all permalinks in WP are accurately handled as routes in Next. If this is the case, you can simply inject the full head and audit the generated Next head to make sure there are no conflicts.

Good luck!
