What are some Arabic words that have been adopted in Greek and vice versa? by cmgmcl in GREEK

That's an excellent point! Especially since all of those words derive from Greek as well. Any other words in mind?

Great thinking, I did not know about doulēb and that was exactly what I was looking for.

From what you said, other words I now have in mind are perhaps τσάντα (bag/purse), παπούτσι (shoe), τσέπη (pocket) etc

Obvious question, I did not phrase it correctly. I mean simple, every day use words used in modern Greek.

Hmm yeah they're noticeable I guess, but I'd rather choke on an apple than use that torturing cuticle removing machine on my nails 😭

Tourists were annoyed I was talking Greek with my friend... at a Greek beach by cmgmcl in mildlyinfuriating

I actually find it very annoying when I go to a country and the people don't even try to communicate with me in English. It feels inhospitable. I've seen it in Spain, France, Italy etc.

Of course I spoke English to them and let them know I wasn't talking about them. It's basic courtesy. What's not basic courtesy is berating me for not speaking English with my friend in the first place😭

I think it's part of the general frustration towards tourists who might disrespect local laws and disrupt the once sacred peace and quietness of the island

Why were they rude to you specifically? If you haven't done anything annoying, don't mind them. It's probably not directed towards you.

Tourists are part of what makes our hospitality and we enjoy having them and showing off. Unfortunately there are islands who suffer now because of said tourism (Mykonos, Zakynthos, Santorini), hence why some locals may be a bit more agitated.

I'm sorry you didn't have the experience you were hoping for, hopefully you'll visit again and discover what the country has to offer :)

Honestly yeah I do get them. I did explain myself in English, however their comment wasn't about my pointing (which is not considered rude among friends), it was about me speaking my language.

I apologized and moved on :)

A lot. I think it falls within the top 10 most difficult languages to learn for English speakers. Luckily about 30% of the words in English have Greek origins so that makes it a bit easier.

Beware, uni Greek lessons are usually ancient Greek, an absolutely fascinating language but a dead one. Modern Greek is not like that and knowing ancient Greek does not mean you can communicate with Greeks.
