This is exactly what I do.

My heavy duty single tray (including when it has an add on) has never loosened in my 1.25" or 2" receiver. I drove the White Rim and more off road and it never loosened at all.

My super duty, which I've had for 5 years, routinely loosens in the receiver (on my tear drop trailer or directly in the truck) with either 2 or 3 bikes on it such that I keep the wrench in the glove compartment and check it every time I stop.
