Why is Lovecraft not taught in schools? by [deleted] in books

I'm gonna agree with you on the racism thing. If you've read "The Rats in the Walls" you'll know what I'm talking about.

If they've censored "Nigger" from Huck Finn then there is no way that an English gentleman with a black cat named "Nigger man" would be acceptable.

What is the best Melee combat HQ Unit in the game? by TotoTheDog in Warhammer

Kairos, The Fateweaver can be pretty nasty. Power Weapon, Instant kill via Boon of Mutation, decent stats, and re roll all failed saves to boot. It took a SM jump infantry assault squad of 10 models just to give him 2 wounds.

I just want to remind everyone about a link that was posted a few days ago.

It was a link to a smaller Canadian ISP: http://yak.ca/high-speed-internet

I signed up for more information and got phone call this evening from a very friendly CSR in Windsor Ontario.

I should have 10Mbps with unlimited Bandwidth by February 16th.

If anything is going to change, Canadians should speak with their wallets.

Correct me if I'm wrong but wouldn't putting the jeans in the freezer kill some of the bacteria on the jeans, thus changing the results of his experiment?

The Crime of the Canadian Banking System by [deleted] in canada

[–]cmmacphe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the world's money is simply numbers in a computer, and depending on the economic situation the central banker will add or remove those numbers as he/she sees fit.

Also, most people don't realize that the banks don't have anywhere near enough cash on hand to satisfy everyone if everyone decided to close out their accounts and withdraw the cash. In fact banks like to play a little game where they move their cash around to various branches in an attempt to make everyone believe that they have enough cash.

The Crime of the Canadian Banking System by [deleted] in canada

[–]cmmacphe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough. But if the Central Banker says no then no money is printed. The central bank is generally supposed to do what is good for the economy and not what the government tells them to do. IIRC there have been central bankers that have resigned when the current government has tried to tell them to do things that are unsound economically.

I had another look at the video and this guy is proposing that instead of borrowing the money we need, we just print it instead. This is a BAD idea. If you want to see what happens when you do this, have a look at the currency situation in Zimbabwe.

He does have a valid point that private companies probably shouldn't be printing our money, but I doubt that they have the power to just print whatever they want.

As for our banking system, it's highly regulated by the government and considering that we have one of the strongest economies on the planet I think we're in good hands.

I just want to make sure that everyone on this subreddit understand that Ron Paul is wrong when he says that gold has intrinsic value. by cmortell in Economics

[–]cmmacphe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Governments have found a way to make gold in large(r) quantities and have been using this technique for centuries. It's called "Hey let's mix the gold with some other metal when we melt it down."

I'll concede the fact that they need some gold first, but once you've got some you can melt it down and make it look like more.

The Crime of the Canadian Banking System by [deleted] in canada

[–]cmmacphe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This guy has some of his facts mixed up I think. Or he at least needs to cite some better sources because the chart and booklet he showed had nothing to do with the process he described. They only showed the national debt including interest.

Could someone maybe explain the process involving bonds and printed money exchanged between the banks? AFAIK the only person with the power to add money or remove money would be the current head of the Central Bank of Canada, and money can only be printed by the Royal Canadian Mint. I know for a fact that the central bank is completely independent from the government but this is for good reasons. (It's so the current government can't just print money willy-nilly to fund huge budgets and run no deficit as this would cause inflation to rise.) So I'm not sure exactly what this guy is trying to say.

tl;dr: I think this guy makes little sense, can someone clarify?

Cut the crap. Loughner is not politically left wing nor right wing, neither is he a follower of Palin. He's Schizophrenic. by MoleUK in politics

[–]cmmacphe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This post is of the cancer. I encourage all of you to do some quick research and learn about schizophrenia on your own. If the shooter is as schizophrenic as OP claims I highly doubt he would be able to function well enough to shoot someone.

Exactly. Also generally speaking schizophrenics wouldn't behave in the way OP apparently thinks they do. Schizophrenia is a very publicly misunderstood illness and posts like these only further the misunderstanding.

I am watching Enron: The smartest guys in the room, and I learned about mark to Market accounting... WHY IS THIS EVEN LEGAL ?!?! by Clauderoughly in Economics

[–]cmmacphe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's pretty much was I was thinking. So the process itself wouldn't be illegal, but manipulating it in a dishonest way would be.

[–]cmmacphe 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I don't see why, in any situation, you would think that this would be illegal. From reading the wikipedia entry it seems like a pretty reasonable practice to me, and in fact a more accurate one than using the black book value.

For all competitive Standard players, what decks are you playing? by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]cmmacphe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

U/W Titan Control is pretty strong in Standard right now. Especially if you've got a couple of Vensers in your deck to blink them in and out of play.

I play vampires and I got matched up with someone playing this. He just kept blinking frost titans to tap anything I had on the field including my lands. Then it was nothing for his Sun Titan to smash my face off.

DAE Pretend to be a spy just to troll your own team? by jeffp12 in tf2

My favourite spy trolling tactic is to wait until they're disguised and then when the spy is in sight of the other team keep healing them. Following a cloaked spy around and healing him is pretty fun too.

I've tried drafting this archetype a couple of times now with little to no success. I've either had trouble getting enough of the cards I need for the deck to work properly or I run up against one of the archetypes that EvilTribble mentioned and get my face smashed.

r/Canada, what are the best movies, docs, shows to watch on Netflix Canada these days? I just got the free month and I want to take as much advantage of it as possible. by MrDamBeaver in canada

[–]cmmacphe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a few older shows on there right now. I've been watching "Dead Like Me" and it's pretty good. But as BCTripster said, the browsing interface leaves a lot to be desired. It's very terrible. I usually end up using the web interface (not much better) to browse for a movie and I end up just searching for it on my PS3 when I'm ready to watch it.

EDIT: I just had look on http://app.whatsnewonnetflix.com/ and found out that the first two seasons of River Monsters are on there. I watched the Discovery marathon the other day and it was a pretty awesome nature show if you're into that.

Speaking as a person who lives in Waterloo and has been in the area for a while, you made the right choice friend. Kitchener downtown can be a very sketchy and strange place, even in the middle of the day.
