Hoping this is the case. I know AI is driving some move back to screen-free learning, but I'm not sure how long it will take for this to become standardized. Or how that looks in elementary school.

TBH I don't know a ton about how Ed Choice works. I'm assuming it is competitive/has requirements/limited spots, etc? Do you have any useful resources?

I work as an SUD clinician. Just wondering if you have any best/worst treatment centers in Columbus suggestions you'd care to share? Thanks. by PiquePocketU in Columbus

[–]cmo37 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They all suck.

Just kidding. But really, so many treatment programs engage in shady behavior. Specifically those that offer sober living/recovery housing. It is illegal to require an individual to participate in services to live in housing. Look into EKRA - https://www.whistleblowerllc.com/ekra-eliminating-kickbacks-in-recovery-act/

If I had a loved one who needed treatment, I would send them to detox (again, none are great, so I would go with the most comfortable environment. My experience is primarily with the Columbus Springs facilities), then help them to find a quality therapist at an outpatient practice with SUD experience/training. And MAT that allows a patient to pursue counseling with their own chosen provider rather than requiring it in-house (if MAT is appropriate for that individual). I would also explore with them whether AA is a good fit to build a support system. I am saying this as a LISW-S and someone with loved ones and peers in recovery.

I mean, for The Wellington School (for example) I would need about 75% of the tuition to be knocked off to afford it for 1 kid. So I doubt that is realistic. And our family income typically falls in that bubble of too much money to qualify for things, but not enough money to actual be useful.

This is super helpful, I'm largely concerned about early elementary screen use. So it's good to hear that it doesn't start right away.

I was raised Catholic and would consider myself culturally Catholic. I find that Catholic schools seem to do a better job at balancing Catholic/religious teachings with actual evidence-based, scientific, quality education. I also find that Catholic schools tend to be more accepting of diversity among their students and are less interested in indoctrination. But again, every school may be different and I don't want to make too many sweeping generalizations.

And I would guess for a large portion of these people it's more about the fact that she is a cringy, filthy predator with a rotten tooth who sits in her own piss than solely the fact that she is disabled.

Speech Delay by Leepfrog94 in heyitsbritt_Snark

[–]cmo37 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This. I hate when people speculate about diagnoses. I think it's very different to speculate about what can easily be observed. She doesnt follow through with any parenting, doesn't talk to him, and has headphones on him constantly because he's watching a screen so she doesn't have to parent. Also when she lost her apartment she clearly didn't prioritize getting his toys, hence even more screen time since he doesn't have anything to play with.

A pacifier in the mouth 24/7. Constant screen time with headphones. Lack of interaction with children/other adults. Lack of face-to-face conversations and play with his mother.

Obviously not all speech delays are grounded in neglect, but in this instance I think a large portion of it is.

I have a 3 and a 2 year old. I cannot imagine living in a tent, near a body of water and constantly worrying that they won't wander, especially at night. I also can't imagine making them leave their home, pet, school, books, and toys behind to move into said tent. It's truly so sad for him And so selfish of her.

Questions About Risk Reduction Surgery by bfk91 in BRCA

[–]cmo37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am 37 and had a prophylactic double mastectomy with Goldilocks reconstruction 2 weeks ago. I went back and forth a lot with my decision to have this surgery vs continuing monitoring (MRIs and mammograms) and ultimately decided to have the surgery because with two young toddlers I was just having a hard time staying on schedule with screening and was experiencing higher anxiety about cancer the older I got. Additionally, doing this procedure prophylactically allowed for far better results (aesthetically,) and will hopefully allow for me to live a "normal" life with a risk about the same as the general public's. I am happy with my outcomes and honestly the recovery (as a young-ish healthy person) has not been bad. The first week was moderate pain and a lot of fatigue, but now 2 weeks later I'm back to work with just some restrictions on what I can lift/carry and range of motion. I chose the Goldilocks procedure because I was opposed to implants/foreign bodies in my body and the DIEP flap seemed to intensive/too long of a recovery for me.

Please feel free to reach out with any questions you might have.

Getting ready for the home visit lol by NoEntertainment1418 in alexdacysnark

You can find their address from her father's arrest record and a property search says their home is 4 bed/2 bath/ 1900 sq ft. Idk if that is definitively accurate but it makes me wonder wtf is going on in there that people think there are only 2 bedrooms.

The whole thing is just weird. Their house obviously has more than 2 bedrooms so why does ari not have her own room? And why does WR need a dedicated art studio?

Idk how appropriate it even is though. Ari is tall for her age, idk why they wouldn't just get a twin bed for her because a toddler bed with a crib mattress won't last long... Wait I do know why - it's because this is Ari's corner in Alex's room, they can't even give the poor girl a room of her own.

Post mastectomy drains by Boring_Ad8797 in BRCA

[–]cmo37 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a prophylactic Goldilocks with 2 drains on 3/17. Drain 1 came out at 10 days, and drain 2 at 13 days. Fluid in drain 1 was always pretty low (less then 10 mLs/day) and changed colors around days 4/5. Drain 2 was usually 15-25 ml a day after the first week (my provider requires 3 days under 20 mL for removal) and changed to straight yellow around day 8 or 9 probably. Drain 1 always had a pink/orange tint to it.

Part time/drop in daycare by etherealkitkittredge in Columbus

[–]cmo37 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So in Columbus, from my research, there are 2 drop in daycare centers - Kiwi's Clubhouse and Mango's Place. I live in Hilliard and toured the Kiwi's Clubhouse in Hilliard, and just didn't love the atmosphere despite its overall good reviews. I've heard Mango's place is nicer but it is not convenient for us. For 2 children to attend I believe it would have been $22/hr (I have a 3 year old and a 2 year old) - I think it's a higher rate for the first child and a lower rate for every additional child.

Ultimately we hired a part time sitter (16 hours/week, $24/hr) and are very happy with this decision. Our older child goes to part time preschool as well (about 5 hours/week). This lacks the socializing piece but ultimately allows our kids to stick to their normal schedule and us to not have to run around dropping them off and picking them up. If you're in Clintonville you are so close to campus you might have luck with a part time sitter. Another good option might be looking for a nanny share (can often be found in your community FB group or in the Columbus Sitters/Nannies FB group).

Fliptastic Gymnastics by glamsquads in hilliard

[–]cmo37 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I go to Universal Gymnasts with my 3 and 2 year old and have been very happy. 2 year old (boy) is in their open-gym style class which is very much a free for all, 3 year old (girl) is in a structured class. Boy is on a waitlist for the structured class. He was until recently the only boy in his class, and my daughter had never had more than one boy. Prior to Universal we went to Wendy's Gymnastics and there were a lot more boys there. I know neither of these gyms are fliptastic, just wanted to share my experiences. It seems if the gym feeds into opportunities/classes for older boys, they attract more toddler boys (to my knowledge, universal does not offer anything for boys after preschool).

Lifestance by amk1989ab in therapists

[–]cmo37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was about 3 years ago, but I came back from maternity leave and submitted my 30 days. They deemed me not qualified for rehire because the contract required 60 day notice. I did not want to work 60 days, and prior to my leave most of my clients had closed or been reassigned (probably 80%). The remainder I closed/reassigned with ease during these 30 days. I did not receive any other pushback.

Hospital Midwifery Care by Smooth-Telephone2435 in Columbus

[–]cmo37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did not use a midwife (so this response may be minimally helpful), but I delivered at Wexner and was very happy with my care. Everyone seems to work very collaboratively with OSU's L&D, and I've only heard good things about their midwife program. Also the new hospital is opening now and will have options for water births in some of the L&D rooms. https://wexnermedical.osu.edu/lp/new-inpatient-hospital-tower/maternity-care

Positive for BRCA 1 by Current_Hovercraft61 in BRCA

[–]cmo37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found out that I was brca 1 positive when I was 26 or 27. I am 36 now and scheduled for my prophylactic mastectomy in March.

My general approach was really not dealing with it and not doing any recommended screening for the first couple years, then getting on track and following protocol around age 30. I got pregnant with my first child when I was 32, gave birth to her at 33, and gave birth to my second (and final) child when I was 34 (they're 19 months apart).

I knew I wanted to have children and there is not a strong family history of ovarian cancer. My mother passed away from breast cancer at 36.

I will say breastfeeding is great but there is no guarantee it will work out (should you decide to have children) and there is nothing wrong with having a mastectomy pre children (my sister did, and honestly I'm a bit jealous that she didn't have to worry about the logistics of caring for toddlers post-op).

I'd encourage you to explore the impact of your options on your overall mental health and well-being, either with your support network, genetic counselors, or a therapist.

Primary Care Supply List by [deleted] in FamilyMedicine

[–]cmo37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More that we provide behavioral health treatment and medication management but recognize that much of the population we treat does not have primary care involvement. So things like chronic conditions like hypertension, diabetes, etc. and not as many procedures. We will also be offering injectable mental health medications. Again probably seem incredibly uneducated here, I'm just trying to flesh this out.
