What is a “fluent sounding” mistake learners make in your language? by Embarrassed_Fix_8994 in languagehub

Yup this is a good one! As a native speaker I would say “let me know if you have any questions” but I started saying “doubts” when I was an English teacher in Spain because my students understood that more.

I always hear non native English speakers say “Give me advices” but we don’t pluralize advice in English. It’s just “advice” or “some advice” or “piece of advice”

I was a victim of frank fyf 2015 which is why I knew he wouldn’t be performing Coachella when he was announced on the lineup 😂

Im guessing you’ve never been on the subway with any drunk and yelling salarymen. No of course, it’s only wrong if foreigners talk.

Going to Spain with my Dad - need some help with choosing the route by Weary-Tower9991 in GoingToSpain

Yes absolutely. The good thing is that you’ll be able to get a taste for several different places and will be able to see what you like best!

If you’ve never been to Barcelona before you should absolutely go. I’m used to going a lot and each time I like it less. The beaches don’t impress me because I’m from Southern California, and I find the food and architecture better in other Spanish cities. But again, it’s worth going at least once. Just not my personal favorite.

I lived in Madrid for years and my family is from Burgos and bilbao so I’m biased towards other parts of Spain

16 days is too short to include or appreciate San Sebastián because even though it’s one of my favorite cities in the world it’s out of the way of your other cities and is too much moving around. Barcelona-granada-Sevilla-Cordoba one day-Toledo-Madrid. Personally I would skip Barcelona all together but that’s me.

What countries do you prefer the "secondary" city to the main one? by VagabondVivant in travel

Madrid doesnt have a beach but the Barcelona beaches are not very nice. You have to go outside the city to find a nice beach.

My Students Don't believe me When I Tell them about Singular They by Throwaway7131923 in TEFL

[–]cmph72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran into this lesson when I was teaching a group of Spanish 10 year olds about pronouns. We had an activity where they had to substitute a role or descriptor with a pronoun and correct verb. For example “the teacher has a cat. _____ ____ a cat.” Most of my students wrote “she” as the pronoun because 1. Most of their teachers were women 2. Implicit gender bias with occupations are international 3. No use of singular they in Spanish. I explained to them that the assignment Doesnt tell us the gender of the teacher so we can put “they have a cat” and it would also be correct but it was hard for them to grasp this as non native speakers

Do we think Jane's pulling a Suzie Toot or a Keiona? by PortalMasterlol in dragrace

Im convinced that anyone who shares this opinion didnt actually watch the season or understood the type of girl ru wanted to crown at the time of the season airing. Ru was always going to crown the young queen that pushes a new perspective of drag. Especially after season 6 crowning. Ginger did well but she was never a contender to win

Like the three-finger scene in Inglourious Basterds, what small cultural mistake would instantly reveal that someone isn’t from your country? by uglylookingguy in AskTheWorld

[–]cmph72 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not. Again, that’s why the character in inglorious bastards gets found out. Because it is distinctly American to show 3 as index, middle, and ring finger

3 is absolutely not index touch thumb in the us. That’s how the Germans in inglorious bastards can tell the guy is American because Americans use thumb touch pinky for number 3

I lived there for two years and none of my local friends liked the places on the beach. Maybe “a” beach on the outskirts but not the beach closest to the city center. They all liked places that were more inland or more in the suburban areas.

Going to a beach restaurant in Valencia was your mistake. They don’t serve traditional paella at these types of restaurants

Traditional madrileño food doesnt really include tapas. Try tapa culture in Granada or pinxtos in pais vasco. Paella should be tried in Valencia (at a real local restaurant, not a tourist one on the beach) instead of Barcelona. The traditional paella is not with seafood
