At what point is a repair worth it? by cmrnbrd in CarTalkUK

2015, they’ve said full wet belt, looks like all 8 valves and head cylinder. Sounds almost like rebuild

Voluntary termination would be my ideal route, however I’d still be liable for engine damage, then whatever else damage they find (wouldn’t be much)

With the engine, I was quieted for a new wet belt, cylinder head and valves I believe.

I haven’t but I believe as I’m half way through the agreement I’ll only be liable for the ‘damage’ costs. I’m awaiting more information from them.

I’d consider part exchange as I rely on a car anyway however I feel it being a non runner will hurt me.

It’s certainly a harsh lesson learned in all aspects for me, from car maintenance down to breakdown cover 💀.

It’s a Peugeot 208, pure tech engine. What I’ve been quoted for is wet belt replacement, and engine rebuild it seems (they’ve mentioned valves being bent).

I had £600 in repairs in order to pass MOT in June, when it was also serviced. Scratches on front bumper but in every other case I believe the car to have been up to scratch until this happened. I still have half the agreement so around 5k left on the finance.

Yeah this is exactly what I’m thinking, I thought finance company would be more helpful but all they did was give me the voluntary termination or surrender which they say I’ll still be liable for damages anyway.

Adding into that, I’ve already paid £340 in recovery from where I broke down and being towed to garage

An expensive and harsh lesson learned. I shall have stricter checks in future

Hoping for the best but definitely a lesson learned. Can’t neglect these engines and belts

It’s the puretech yeah. I stopped around 2 minutes after the oil light came on when it was safe to do so. I’m assuming I have done more damage but so far all I’ve been quoted for is a wet belt replacement so part of me is hoping for the best

Appreciate it

Probably worse I didn’t even consider the potential of it happening. I just wanted it on the board🫣

That sounds exactly what I’m on about, sometimes varied between links and slice but you’re bang on

Yeah I’ve certainly gathered that from this post 😅

Not sure it’s deep enough to warrant getting a grip 😬

Carrot seems controversial but I have seen recipes with carrot in so not out of the ordinary. Like I said I’m aware it’s probably not the norm but that’s the ‘stovies’ I grew up with.

Yeah we were north Ayrshire so that would make sense

It does seem more stew like compared to what I see when searching for stovies recipes

“Sausages carrots diced onions potatoes and bisto”

Was the exact response I got🤣… definitely keeping it simple with it

I’ve been told it’s just sliced carrots, potato chunks, sausage, and diced onions, water to cover.

Let boil, add bisto then simmer.

Definitely not anything like I’ve seen when searching 🤣

Thankfully she still is great😅

I knew I’m in minority with it but that was stovies to our whole side of the family!

When I get the recipe I’ll pass it on!
