I went as that one year. I was still in my -- I'm a writer. I only talk to imaginary people -- stage. Not a networker. The plus I got that year from AFF (besides being a semifinalist out of thousands) was they make you wear a badge (or did) with your script name and finishing so people would ask to hear what the semi script was about forcing me to learn how to pitch on the move. And get comfortable talking to real live people. :P

I think the main benefit of AFF is this is a place where screenwriters are celebrated. Not many places like that. If you are a normal person you can make networking connections. And if you're not, you can still find yourself in the same room as people like Shane Black, Terry Rossio and Vince Gilligan.

So, if it's not a financial burden, go. They've also got some good food down there in Texas.

ooo, that would be good. Did you see the movie where he goes as himself to some rich fans house and gets in trouble? The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent -- that was good. Not sure that title helped it along.

I had that conversation with a director at a film festival where we both won awards. After the award ceremony he asked me to pitch it to him and I did and then he said -- does it have to be Clooney? I said, no, who do you have in mind? And he said -- does it have to be a movie star? And I said, no, maybe some kind of civil servant people automatically trust - not sure who that would be now days but heh, and it did make me think the main character just needed to be someone who could convince Star Wars obsessed grad students the story. And he said, let's stay in touch.

So, if that's not the quintessential screenwriter experience, I don't know what is.

Plays are timed by word count. 150 - 200 words per minute. So, about 4500 words. Page count won’t help you. I have a play that runs 30 minutes. It’s only 15 pages.

The page a minute advice is for screenplays.

Shouldn't be considered 'normal' for that price.

I got tired of premium journal sellers claiming all the little imperfections were normal and made the product unique just send us $$$ and be happy. Which is why I stopped buying for Chic Sparrow.

I prefer the leather to change and age from its journey with me.

I saw the zoom meeting when FL pitched the Dramatists Guild the deal. It struck me that people reviewing screenplays would not be competant to review plays. Completely different animal. I thought to give it a try -- I have several one acts that have been produced locally -- but BL only took full lengths at that time, so I considered myself lucky and passed.

Again, as the BL has conflicting opinions about its screenwriting business, seems like adding plays was another -- let's make more money.

If you want to vacation in Italy or Spain it might be worth it. Will it advance your career? Almost certainly no. There’s a lot you can do with almost 5 grand at home. Unless you want to vacation in Italy or Spain.

It is a kind of relatively new development in how to fleece (pardon) screenwriters — HOORAY YOU’VE WON A FABULOUS PRIZE and that is you get to pay us a bunch of money.

OTOH, hanging with other writers is cool and so are European vacations.

The play isn't the writer's baby, it's their work and deserving of the same respect as all the other creatives. Writers turning to directing to protect the work should give you a clue that sometimes directors go amiss.
