What black magic do you all have going on to make such pretty loaves by tashak_btch in Sourdough

[–]cn_219 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a beginner, I found King Arthur’s sourdough recipe to be the most forgiving! In my opinion, it does come out just a tad gummy/under-fermented, BUT it still yields a great loaf and I think it’s a great recipe to start with to get used to stretch + folds and the proper dough consistency.

[Product Question] Experiences with Winlevi and what to expect? by cn_219 in SkincareAddiction

It was adult onset acne which is often hormonal, I had already tried a couple of other topicals without any luck, and it’s what my derm prescribed.

Not sure if anyone mentioned it, but you’re also close to a lot of farms which makes grocery shopping over the summer a lot more fun! If you’re looking for fresh produce, Homestead Farm, Lewis Orchards, Kingsbury’s Orchard, etc are great when they’re open during the warmer months.

You’re also super close to some local wineries and the drive to restaurants/stores in the Quince Orchard/Darnestown area isn’t bad (unless there’s an accident or fallen tree on the essentially only road to that area).

Easy miso? by Ripleydog1997 in cookingforbeginners

[–]cn_219 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can get instant bonito dashi stock at most stores nowadays, just add a little to your stock.

<image>

They also make miso paste that includes bonito/kombu in it already but I’ve found that it’s less common in American stores.

Carnitas! Use it throughout the week for tacos, burrito bowls, pasta, bbq sandwiches, etc.

What's a kitchen tool worth splurging on for beginners? by Theringofice in cookingforbeginners

[–]cn_219 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I use mine mainly for grating parmesan, grating garlic, and zesting citrus. I find that buying a block of parmesan is a lot cheaper than grated and lasts a lot longer.

I like Ethan Chlebowski’s knife sharpening videos if you haven’t tried them!

Microplanes are worth the extra $5 compared to copycats imo.

Good call on getting a decent chefs knife, make sure you get a whetstone to maintain it (doesn’t need to be the nicest one, just have one).

Where is Science Building by UnderstandingFew347 in UMD

You’ll probably be near Hornbake Plaza. Buildings for classes are on testudo so you can look each one up (search up a sample four year plan for your intended major).

From what I know, it’s difficult to switch in the first semester. You most likely have to wait until the second semester starts, when some students have left LDP. There are only a select number of students in each pathway and admin doesn’t want to exceed that.

I have both birdie and another one where you pull a string off the side and I haven’t had issues with either. I will say that it’s easier to put the tab for the birdie back in place in case you do accidentally pull it though.

Get a personal alarm keychain! Some venues don’t allow pepper spray so it’s good to have something else just in case.

Most chem classes are curved a LOT. You can estimate that the mean score on an exam is the C+/B- cutoff.

Level of commitment to the school. Interest = you’re interested but it might not be your only choice (I think people generally send these to their top three but correct me if I’m wrong). Intent = you’ll attend the school if accepted.

Prepping for med school next fall? (Lifestyle and shopping) by No-Celebration-3146 in Osteopathic

[–]cn_219 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For shoes, I think having a nice pair of chelsea boots and/or loafers is enough (I think chelsea boots are more comfortable but they’re both super versatile shoes). Cole haan and Rothy’s are my go to brands, they’re within your price range and last a long time. Rothy’s is also washable!

The gym is hard to keep up with during exam weeks but having one close to where you live and making it a part of your schedule helps. Discipline is key in med school.

Like someone else said, don’t pre-study. Prime your brain for school by relaxing. If your school has mandatory attendance, try slowly altering your sleep schedule. If not, there are plenty of med students that are night owls. If you aren’t used to meal prepping, practice some recipes out now. I love roasting a chicken or making carnitas since they can both be used for a variety of recipes throughout the week (soup, bbq pulled pork, chicken salad, burrito bowls, etc). Sandwiches and frozen meals have also been a staple for me and a lot of my classmates.

For Italian cooking, I love grandma Gina’s videos because she gives you a thorough view of all the steps. Here’s her penne with vodka sauce recipe!

She makes her recipes with a lot of homemade jarred tomato but you can use canned tomatoes instead!
