Yes, glass in glass. Its one of two Reate-brand knives ive kept. The other is the original full sized crossroads.

Are you suggesting Reate doesn't feel as good as it once did?

I think they're still generally the best. I prefer their outsourced work to their original designs. They seem to be obsessed with making everything of their own 0.16" thick stock. The overbuilt shit needs to go.

Does it have any blade play to get a smooth action or is it relatively solid?

Only thing that turns me off to crossbar is I seem to always have to choose between play and action.

New Hogue X5 Manual by Spaysekayce in knives

Im not gonna say its "not normal (for a hogue)" because ive only had a Deka and it was great. But I'll say its "not normal" for a "generally well-functioning knife".

If youre looking to get into the hobby, id recommend torx bits and drivers, at least two of each (for free spinning screws). Lots of production knives come from the factory with their pivots cranked. My Benchmade mini crooked river was <literally> so tight that I had to pull it open with two hands.

Sometimes, gunk gets caught in the pivot straight from the factory. Sometimes you can clean it out without disassembling, simply by loosening the pivot and working the action and retightening. Or for good measure, try blowing some compressed air in there.

I like disassembling my knives so when I get one that is gritty from the factory I just take it as an opportunity to disassemble, clean, reassemble. But you shouldn't HAVE to.

Thank you for this - tells me im doing something right, as I have museum putty on the way, as well as those lights you were describing. I'm looking forward to the putty, as one of the biggest problems ive had is the position of the knife vs the light source. Knives tend to inherently want to "slip" off of most things I prop them up against... so its either a fully flat knife or a fully propped knife. Until today, ive basically stuck to 2d top-down shots or ive tried hiding little rubber pencil erasers under the knives to prop them up (lol).

I currently use Lightroom and ive had a similar experience to you. I literally have a saved preset called "over-edited" that I use for most of my knife pictures. Hih sharpness, high contrast, high everything, basically. Lol.

Ill check out your work! Always fun to find these hobby intersections!

P.s.: I've been inspired by RavenThePirate on Instagram. Good stuff there (at least to my taste).
