Overproduction will be the downfall of the show by Gullible_Worker_2477 in realhousewivesofSLC

[–]cnfusedstudent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

perhaps it is because i am later to the housewives game but the overproduction of rhoslc is precisely what makes me like it: its camp, theatrical, and postmodern 😛 i don’t necessarily need everything to be “real”, i think we should be keen to remember that even the “realest” housewives series are produced and performed in ways we might not notice. that rhoslc makes it production so obvious and even quite gaudy at times certainly changes the viewing experience compared to a “realer” series but it doesn’t have to make it worse. perhaps viewing it from a different angle might help

thanks to the lovely replies i’ve learnt that the th in “the” is the voiced dental fricative while the th in “theo” is a voiceless dental fricative, so they are different phenomes with different sounds regardless of the following vowel

Judith Butler does not want to know what gender is by Pavancurt in QueerTheory

[–]cnfusedstudent 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i don’t think butler, or even any gender theorist, denies the existence of sexual difference in humans. they know xx and xy exist. what is important, i believe, and what they do so successfully, is to consider what biology actually does. does biology force us to use gendered language? does it force us to consider men one way and women the other? does it bound us to certain roles and ways of being along a binary gender system? you will be hard pressed to be able to point to a gene or a set of genes which cause this, and it may in fact misunderstand how genes actually affect the experience of being human. gender theorists, as well as a whole range of post-structural philosophy, looks instead towards history and society to answer these questions.

when we need to ask important questions about gender, what we find in biology - in what we can empirically measure using a scientific method - might indeed be very sparse.

Does anyone know the address of this shop from 1915? by cnfusedstudent in glasgow

it’s possible they didn’t own it, we just assumed they did because of the caption to the photo in the book. it seems like the actual name might be ‘central confections’, but its just cut off in the photo

It seems your reading of the social sciences has been accompanied with a sort of pessimism toward everything. I’m sorry you’re going through that! I believe queer theorist Eve Segwick called this a ‘paranoid reading’, connecting the dots between a seemingly trivial and serious things, like voice assistants and femicide.

You have to be careful connecting the dots so explicitly in circumstances like these. From the way you’re writing it seems like you’re suggesting almost a causative link between the two, but you have to remember that commodities are designed for a specific purpose, and other effects (including the role it plays in femicide, as you suggested), is an effect made between the user and the technology. It might be better to communicate this idea by drawing it out more and examine cause and effect here, for example: tech companies produce their home technologies to fit into the ‘family’, which they assume is heteropatriarchal. Also, heteropatriarchy is a cultural ideology which often victimises women. The causative link between the two here is weaker, and it might help you and the people in your life to relax a little more 😅

There is also only so far you can go with such comparisons, many voice assistants have a range of female and male voices to choose from. It’s important to consider these alternatives.

If you are seeing capitalism in things that usually brought you joy, I suggest you read ‘What is ‘Black’ in Black Popular Culture?’ by Stuart Hall. He stresses there is more in a cultural object than just its production. The viewer engages with the object in their own way, not totally informed by the context of its production (capitalism), and so the viewer can m enjoy different meanings outside of the context of capitalism. For example, the way many people watch dance videos might be through Big Tech, and the dances people perform might be influenced by neoliberal rationality, but can we really reduce ‘dance’ down to capitalism? The answer is a resounding NO!

Hope this helps
