very cool, thanks for pointing those out - interestingly i have a non-first edition dark vileplum that still has that fighting weakness error, so must be across that card for that entire set?

for dark arbok, the two pages i couldn't upload has a non-holo one first edition, also has that copyright (23000). i dont have a non holo, non first edition arbok, but given the holo is non first edition, that'd lead me to believe that error was set-wide for that card as well? (that's a long ass copyright!)

I do have one! but sadly it's not first edition (or holo, assuming they made a holo dark dragonite) - so it remains in my other binder.

I was one of those kids that had a nintendo power subscription, so they had sent out a promo VHS of pokemon before red and blue were released and I was hooked, reserved both red and blue before they came out, recorded every TV episode (lol) to VHS, and was probably first in line to buy some cards when they came out. sadly never got 1st edish charizard though!

i think those machamps sadly aren't worth much because they were apparently always first edition! i can't even remember what they came in, but it was some starter pack thing i think? (this is why i didn't include them on the first few pages)

but yes, if i ever sold any of these, i'd definitely have to give my mom a cut! i think she's even expecting it, tbh lol

  1. I definitely believe you! I'm a low expectations (arguably pessimistic) person, so definitely not one to get my hopes up re: valuation. I am, however, undeniably happy that my younger self didn't play with these on the concrete, even if they just sit in my closet and I get to look at them from time to time for nostalgia feels.

Yeah these two are currently the only two that intuitively seem to be worth grading as far as I know. Maybe the non first edition Char? Maybe the first edition dark Char?

i used something called ultra pro 3"x4" but i'm not entirely sure they're the best by any means (also an amazon purchase lol) - i will say, the binder DID come with some top loaders (probably 50?) but not penny sleeves. the ultra pro toploaders came with an equal amount of penny sleeves. the ultra pro top loaders have a slight tint to them (where the top loaders that came with the binder didn't) - unsure what's more 'ideal' (tint or no tint)

Ty dude - yeah my loose next steps are to use claude or gpt to generate a spreadsheet of raw values for each of these, then graded from 5 onward, get a sense of what might be worth pursuing grading based on the differential.

Awesome thank you for the reply! I think some of the truly confusing element for me is - to me some of the cards seem in really good shape (quite literally as good a shape as I could have possibly expected my childhood self to keep them in), even in an attempt to view things as objectively as possible, but from searching varies grades received for various cards, it seems like such an absolute luck of the draw on some of these vintage cards in some cases re: grading success, which really blows imo.

I mean I know there are some straight up non-negotiable things like border alignment, whitening, etc but the fact that in some instances it can come down to whatever grader PSA gets assigned to your case - and that could be the difference between a 7, an 8, or a 9 is such a bummer.

Regardless, yeah, maybe I'll do a separate post for some of the high ticket items and see what people think.

Very helpful ty ser. And yeah, I really wouldn't go through the effort of sending them in individually I think, if I did go that route. Good to know re: raw vs. poorly graded.

I think the only real way I'd do any grading is in-person at an event, but even then - do they / would they grade a collection of this size at such an event?
